Many species of birds have already begun flocking and migrating southward, the majority of which are harmless. One necies passing throuch McHenry County whicn can do considerable damage to trees is the yellow-bellied sapsucker. The yellow-bellied sapsucker is a woodpecker about the size of a starling. Most of the body is black and white, with a red patch above the beak. Pine trees are most susceptible to damage due to sapsuekers. Austrian, white, and red pines are favorite targets. Other bees frequently plaqued with sapsuekers include spruce, maple, mountain ash, and various fruit trees. Sapsucker damage appears as horizontal or vertical rows of round or rectangular holes in the trunk and major branches of the tree. Small amounts of scattered areas of sapsucker feeding will not harm the tree. However, these. birds will frequently return to a favorite area on a tree and become very destructive. If heavy damage goes all the way around a trunk or limb, all branches above it may eventually die. Additionally, the tree may become weakened by heavy damage and fall over in Ugh winds or under the weight of accumulating snow and ice. Trees may also be harmed by insects or disease organisms which can enter through the open wounds left by the sapsucker. Controlling sapsucker damage is difficult. Areas on trees that are repeatedly attacked by sapsuekers should be protected by wrapping with bunap or some other suitable material. Hanging pie tins, pieces of foil, or other devices mat flash in the wind and make noise may help by frightening the birds. Hanging rubber snakes or pieces of hose on trees has also worked in some cases. Postmaster LeRoy M. Smith said regular residential and business deliveries wfll not be made, and usual post office lobbv services will not be available with the exception of lockbox service. The lobby will be open from noon until 4 p.m. Delivery of certain expedited mail services will continue during the holiday weekend. These include special delivery and express mail. QERVICE News Flight certificate to area student Seventeen . University of Illinois students received flight certificates from the Institute of Aviation last summer.
