Project KISS was designed by the McHenry County Red Cross, and funded through an Illinois Department of Transportation grant, made possible by the cooperation of the City of McHenry. The project specifications require the cooperation of a governmental agency, a hospital, and a civic organization. New mothers at McHenry Hospital receive the passenger safety training and rent the car seats during a special Sunday session each week in the obstetrics department. It is not necessary to have a baby at McHenry Hospital to be eligible to rent the infant safety seat, however, as the Wednesday sessions are for all other interested parents in the area. Ms. Cross noted that as of July 1 of this year, all children three years old and under must be properly restrained in an approved safety seat. The' Wednesday training sessions Include a film, discussion, and demonstration on the use of the safety seats. "The best safety seat cannot do the job of protecting a child, unless parents know how to use the seat properly," said Ms. 'Tne one-hour training sessions will provide parents Cross. t will pro with all the necessary information to ensure their child is buckled up safely." The McHenry Area Jaycee Women conduct the training sessions. Since each year more children are killed or crippled in car crashes than from all other causes combined, the Jaycee Women, McHenry Hospital, and the Illinois Department of Transportation are working to alleviate the grim statistics through project The cost of nursing homes *111B/ '0_. My mother was going to go into a nursing home, but it would cost us more than $1,500 a month. What normally situated people with an average income can afford such a cost? We can't and we are just sick at the thought of what may happen to our plans for dignified and comfortable last years for her. "I heard of a home in Florida where < some older people have set up their own nursing home in a large house that they themselves own. The cost is less than $500 a month for each of them. That's what I heard. Why can't everybody do that instead so many corporations get rich operating nursing and retirement homes?" - Dora S. A. - There are a number of such "homes" around the country. I know of none in Florida, but there is one in .Oregon. The reason they have come into operation is obvious. It is less expensive. However, there are many pitfalls in such an operation. When you read here what has to be done to organize a self-help nursing or retirement home, you can see the many problems the resident- owners must face. First, of course, there has to be a house, a large house that can be* remodeled for a half dozen to a dozen residents. The house could be acquired by a group formed as a small corporation. For this the group would need a lawyer. The members would pool their financial resources, establish a bank account, and accounting systems and tax exemptions, and then buy a house. The group in Oregon purchased the house of one of the members. Then, and most important, somebody has to be selected to be manager; either one of the resident-owners, or an outsider. The house in Oregon is run by an outsider. There must be a kitchen that can handle the necessary three meals a day for all of the residents, and there must be enough* bathrooms in working order. Committees have to be formed to handle purchases - food, idtchen supplies, paper products, cleaning supplies, etc. It is a considerable undertaking that can succeed in operation only if the resident-owners have a lot of commonsense and enough money to handle the initial investment. Lots of good advice is needed to get the project off on the right start. Is there such a retirement home somewhere in the country or Canada whose owners would be willing to write a letter that explains how they did it? If so, I will pass it on to Dora S.
