"We haven't been successful good homecoming since I've been last re," said Schlender. "We've play ed different things. He is more or less the heart and soul of the offense. Both McHenry and Cary- Grove could contest to that. Both have had its share of ups and downs in the quarterback position Cary has yet to win a game in the Fox Vallfey Conference. Part of the reason of losing the first two games in the conference is the loss of the starting quarterback. Dean Britt led the Trojans to two wins, but has been out of the lineup* because of an illness. Cary coach Mike Buck still isn't sure if Britt will start Friday night at McHenry. Game time is 8 p.m. McHenry sputtered at the quarterback position early in the season, but have come on strong with Craig Hill. Hill was one of the main contributers in the Warriors 16-15 win over Crown-Dundee last Saturday. Hill completed 10-of-17 passes 4* 161 yards. Hill-will definetly be at the Warrior controls to help the Warriors not only to win two in a row, but to give the fans a happy homecoming. Schlen4er, however, isn't putting extra pressure on his squad because of homecoming. "We haven't been at homecoming since T\ here," said Schlender. tried different fact of the mat should have Preview •"T think last year we were too fired up." According to Schlender, he might not have to spend too much time getting his team fired up for the Trojans. "Even though it was a big win (win over Crown-Dundee), they weren't ..especially fired up/' Schlender said. "It was kinda scary at one time. I hoped the kids would be fired up, but they were calm and relaxed and seemed to do well that way. "I think the character of the team is that they want to be relaxed and be confident". Schlender is hoping his team will be confident against Cary as it was.against Crown-Dundee. He lias a lot of respect for the Trojans, despite the 0-2 record in the FVC. . Besides Britt, the Trojans also have some more talent in the backfield. Matt Erkfcson gained 200 yards against Woodstock last week. He is the Trojan's leading rusher. On defense, the Trojans are led by linebacker Pat Hughes. He is the leading tackier on the team. Buck is as concerned with McHenry, as Schlender is with his team. "We are going to have to play Buck. 'The we haven't e first quarter, are small, but very Defensively, we didnt do Woodstock passing the rush. We team at all" Tom Neumann taps in this putt on the 17th green. He finished with a 42 on the back nine to score a 82 on the day. STAT* PHOTOS «• um Chris Vehrino hits his second shot on the 18th fairway. He shot a 39 on the back nine to finish with 82. Warrior golfers hand over FVC crown Chuck Cuda and his. Warrior golfing squad went to Plum Tree Rational Golf Club Tuesday with the idea of successfully defending its Fox Valley Conference Crown. But as the day developed, Cuda calmy watched that crown slowly slip away. Crystal Lake South was crowned as champions shooting a 315, while Crown- Dundee pulled off a surprise by taking second with 323. McHenry had to settle for third place at 335. "Hiey are just not putting it together," said Cuda on U»3*uS. "TH»y JuM didn't play up to par. Thnr are very disappointed • in themselves. It's a tough sport, and you have to put it together in one day." Even 5 McHenry's ace couldn't" put it together Tuesday. Tom Neumann had a rough time on the 3,295 yard course, shooting a 82. Teammate Chrisvehring matched him with another 82. Neumann's and Vehring's score tied them with several others, creating a logjam for fifth place. Jim Miller of Crystal Oik South, Jeff Leitner of Crown-Dundee and Dan Zange all shot 82's. Pat Wall of Crystal Lake South led the Gator attack by capturing top medalist honors witn 73. Shawn Larson led Crown-Dundee by taking runner-up honors with 76. The rest of the Gator crew came in with scores of 82,81 and 29 to lead a balance "They had +bi balance. Dundee-Crown was a sunrise, but they played steady golf. We beat Dundee-Crown and also South at the Randall Oakes Invitational. It is disappointing," said Cuda. No one was more disappointed how things went than Neumann. "I missed a lot of putts. My short game fell apart. but I still have a lot of confidence going into districts," said Neumann. Hie senior did have some good moments. He sunk a 20-foot putt on hole number four for a birdie on the 160- yard par three. He also birdieathe 18th hole, a 500- yard par five. Vehring's highlight was a chip-in on the 173-yard par three 17th green. Vehring over shot the green on his tee shot. The green was elevated and Vehring was faced with a shot he had to hit a high cut-shot up on the green. He hit it perfectly for the Warriors, while Kevin Lange was the fourth man with a 90. Cary-Grove and Jacobs tied for fourth place, each shooting 344. Crystal Lake Central was sixth with 353 and Woodstock followed with 416. The Johnsburg volleyball team continued its surge down the season ending stretch by taking a second in the' Zion- Benton tournament Monday and winning its 11th straight Northwest Suburban Conference contest Tuesday. Only Zion-Benton stood in way of the Skyhawks from capturing the tournament championship. Zion-Benton defeated Johnsburg 15-12 twice. Sharal Koenigseder blamed part of the loss to mentally not able to play without Kathy Butler. Butler broke her foot just before the start of the championship contest during warm-ups. "It's always nice to brink home a trophy," saia Koenigseder. "Tne team was devastated at the Latin School Tournament. I don't think they went into it with the intent of winning. We went here (Zion- Benton) with the intent of winning." Johnsburg opened up the tournament with a 15-12,15-6 win over Lakfe Forest.' The Skyhawks then defeated Waukegan Est 15-7, 15-10 to advance to the title match with Zion-Benton. Michele Swartzloff had 13 serves against Lake Forest, while Butler had 11 serves and five aces. Julie Anderson had six kills. Swartzloff had eight serves and four aces against w aukegan East. Johnsburg returned to NWSC play with a 15-8, 15-1 win over Lake Zurich. In the first game, the Skyhawks-had . a little trouble •serving, missing On six. Koenigseder had a little talk with her squad before the second game. It worked, as the Skyhawks held the Bears to one point. "In the second game, we set a Sal,"Koenigseder said. "We ve a tendency to build a seven point lead or so and lose it. Our goal was once we have a lead, keep it and score 15. Keep the pressure on the opponent/' Chris May and Debbie Tvaroh had four aces in the.first game, while' Julie Anderson and Kelly Hart had five, kills. Johnsburg is now 17*5 overall. Lake Zurich harriers nip Johnsburg Depth has been a problem for the Johnsburg Skyhawk cross country team, ana it plagued Bob Texidore's squad again Tuesday. The Skyhawk runners dropped below .500 in the Northwest Suburban Conference with a 26- 31 loss to Lake Zurich. The' win for the Bears keeps them in a three-way tie with Grant and Round Lake for the NWSC lead with one loss a piece. Johnsburg stayed behind tne leaders with a 2-3 record. Tom Fishback of Lake Zurich captured the race at Glacial Park with a time of 14:49. Johnsburg's Pete Bjerning was right behind at 15:20. Mike Lawrence was fourth for the Skyhawks in 15:33, Jeff Nichols fifth in 15:50, Norman Rokosz eighth in 16:07, Mark Widhalm 12th at 16:43, Mike Schrett 14th in 17:23, Bernard Wharton 16th in 17:33 and Steve Schmitt 19:28. "What hurt us was the inconsitency of the fourth and fifth man. u the fifth man runs well, we should be there," said Texidore. "I still feel we can do a lot better than fourth in the conference. We are still shooting for conference champions. If five kids have a good day, we will have good day at conference." The Skyhawks had to forfeit the sophomore-freshmen and girls race, but the race was still run. fittSti 24 - IM.AINDKAl.ER - FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14,1M3 ST AM PMOTO-WAYNf OAVLOtO Lisa AAatuika, Johnsburg's only lady runner, keeps some distance between her and a Lake Zurich runner.
