According to Council statistics, 5,000 people died in accidents associated with fires last year. More than 80 percent of the victims died in the privacy of their own homes. Smoking is still the leading cause of fire deaths in the home. If you're going to smoke, the Council suggests that you never smoke in bed or in any other place where you might fall asleep. Statistics indicate that most fires in the home occur between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. The Council also recommends the following: - Install smoke detectors near bedrooms and high on the wall or on ceilings in your home. Test your batteries at least once each month. - Plan at least two emergency escape routes in case fire should strike. Include children in the drills. Tell them never to go back into the house once they are outside. * - Keep matches away from the reach of children. Last year, 20 percent of home fire victims were children ages 0-14. - Use small, lightweight pots and pans instead of large, heavy utensils which are more difficult to handle. One-third of all homes fires start in the kitchen. - Be sure to have your central heating system checked annually. The air filter must be changed or cleaned regularly to avoid overheating. Heating equipment is the leading cause of residential fires. For a free brochure on fire safety awareness, send a stamped, self-addressed, business size envelope to the Public Relations Department, National Safety Council, 444 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60611. The number of multiple-death fires that were started in fireplaces has doubled from 1976 to 1980, according to recent statistics reported in "Fire Journal." Mike Bolin, University of Illinois Extension forestry specialist, says that to maintain a safe fireplace and avoid becoming part of those statistics, you should begin with the proper selection of firewood. Avoid green wood, he says, because it contains too much moisture. Instead, choose a hardwood that has been seasoned at least six months, preferably a year. By burning unseasoned wood, Bolin says you will have a smoldering fire. And smoldering fires lead to the buildup of creosote-a dark, tar-like substance that can line the chimney flue. If too much creosote collects in the chimney, it can catch fire. Bolin advises you maintain a briskly burning fire and keep the flue temperature above 250 Fahrenheit. 'o clean baked-on creosote, he says to use a stiff-wire cleaning brush like those used by ofessional chimney sweeps, r else hire a chimney sweep to do the job. E MAR RAY COSTUME SHOP 3923 W.
