Two physicians on the medical staff, Dr. S.M. Harrison and Dr. Robert Gibula are performing the operation as a part of the treatment to improve a parent's vision. When the physicians expressed a desire to perform the surgery, Memorial Hospital formed an institutional review committee as prescribed by Food and Drug* Administration regulations. Conventional eyeglasses are usually required in addition-to an intraocular lens. Physicians performing this surgery make detailed reports on the success of the implants and include comments relating to any difficulties. The institutional review committee is headed by Keith Poisson, assistant administrator at Memorial Hospital, which reviews the reports regularly and makes any report necessary to the FDA. The purpose of this procedure is to provide detailed information on the success of the various lenses, together with any difficulties encountered so the FDA can inform all surgeons in the United States about significant developments immediately.
