Elm St. McHenry 385-0170 if By Angela Burden Shaw Free .Press Ira Lee, accused of the 1982 murder of Steven Feldt in Woodstock, pleaded not guilty to the charge last week at an arraignment hearing in the 19th Judicial Circuit Court. Lee is seeking a trial by ury and Judge Roland errmann set Dec. 27 as the trial date. Lee, 31, 508 E. Kimball, Woodstock, was indicted Oct. 11 by the McHenry County Grand Jury on charges of murder and arson in con nection with the Aug. 15,1982, slaying of Feldt, 29, in the victinrs apartment at 521 Burbank Avenue. The defendant was arrested and charged Oct. 3 by Woodstock and Sheriff's police on information ob tained by State's Attorney Ted Floro. The two-count indictment returned by the grand jury charges that Lee "with intent to kill, stabbed Feldt with a knife, causing his death" and that Lee committed the of fense of arson by fire, charging that he damaged the Burbank Avenue residence, where the victim's body was discovered in the living room. Woodstock police were called to Feldt s apartment on Aug. 17 after co-workers became concerned when he had not reported for work for two days. A coroner's jury ruled that Feldt had been killed by multiple stab wounds and had been dead about 36 hours Erior to the discovery of his ody. Lee, father of two children, is represented by Woodstock lawyer Daniel Mengeling. State's Attorney Floro argued for the prosecution in court last week against a motion of the defense, which sought a court order prohibiting witnesses from disclosing confidential in formation. Judge Herrmann denied the motion. The court told Lee, who is being held in McHenry County Jail on $1 million bond, that a murder con viction carries a 20- to 40- year prison term which can be extended to 40- to 80-years and in some instances the death penalty. Judge Herrmann said an arson conviction carries a 6- to 15- y»ar prison term which also can be extended to a 15- to 30- .year sentence. The pudge indicated that the trial should be held before the end of this year when setting the Dec. 27 trial date. The state told the court that it will motion for a handwriting sample from Lee. That matter is expected to be argued in court next week. Push for multi-family, zoning may ease in Wonder Lake by Kurt Begalka Charles Jacobson, president of Wonder Lake Realty Trust, acknowledges he is unsure whether to continue his bid to rezone 112 acres near Thompson and Wondermere roads. Jacobson is seeking village board approval to change the zoning from farming to R-3 for multi-family dwellings. The hitch is a group of irate citizens and an annexation agreement signed Oct. 5, 1978. Tne document guarantees that only single-family homes will be built for a period of 10 years and that the ordinance is "binding upon the parties." Homeowner Dan McGuire cannot understand how the village can consider condominiums. Although an ordinance was passed in 1979 allowing multi-family dwellings, none have been built.' McGuire presented a petition before the board recently signed, by 324 property owners. They charged the project was incompatible with the existing homes, contrary to zoning principles, would exacerbate overcrowded schools, increase traffic to point that it would endanger drivers and children and would result in a need for increased fire and police protection. They also charge the market for multi-family dwellings is depressed and the 'would never be project finished. lished." Stephen Aradas, director of the McHenry County Planning Department, acknowledged condominiums are most popular, behind single-family homes. "I think for the public to hide their heads in the sand is absolutely foolish," added (McHenry* pitei f Experience-' October is National Restaurant Month Enjoy a unique dining exper ience in McHenry County 's f inest restaurants: Andres Steak House. She said high interest rates mean many people can no longer afford to own their own homes. "Owning a home is the great American dream," Aradas said. "That dream dies hard." McGuire is concerned that Jacobson is just trying to unload the property and will not be selective in picking contractors. "This deal with condominiums is a sham, unless he has a developer and a plan to show us," McGuire said. "Who's to say what the development is going to be" "I love growth," McGuire said, "but it has to be regulated to what the community is like." He believes continuation of single-family homes would Erovide a more gradual 'ansition. Wonder Lake Village President Duane Zeman said that the 10-year agreement for single-family homes should be binding, but disagreed with the petition's conclusion that the cost of services would increase if such a project became a reality. The village is presently receiving $189 per year in taxes from the 112 acres, Brian McLaughlin, village trustee and finance chairman, said. He ject six duplexes, housing 60 families, would have a $3 million sales value. This would mean about $3,000 in taxes, he said. Some residents are concerned the project would turn into jvernment subsidized homes, it Beer pointed out proper deeds and tight restrictions can jelimma^tjra^>os^ calculated the proposed proiec of six condominium units and sb Village Oaks Realty proudly announces and welcomes Sandy Soine, as Sales Associate to their firm located in Richmond, II.
