V • Doubles the key for McHenry and Johnsburg i»ri.MM»K,\i.i:n-hui»ay.O< TOKKU2I. IMT, Saturday s McHenry sectional meet could be double troube. J That'i the way coaches Gary Gray Of McHenry and Ron! Cepulis of Johnsburg look at the race for a state berth in the state meet. While the singles look td be wrapped up by area hotshots, both Gray and Cepr" * the doubles matcn open race. The McHenry sectionals Cepulis look at es a wide- will begin on Friday at 1:50 p.m. and end with the finals on Saturday at 9 a.m. Friday, half of trie singles com petition will be held at Peterson Park and half at Knox Park. All doubles competition will be held West Campus. All of Saturday's finals will btf held at West Campus. The sectional field in cludes; Antioch, Grant, Grayslake, Round Lake, McHENRY Nsxp erience will be one of the advantages McHenry will have against the other teams. Neuman and Vehring were on last years squad that finished second. Vehring finished seventh medalist. "Vehring and Neuman have been talking to the other kids," said Cuda. What is even more en couraging, McHenry turned in the fourth best sectional score of the 12 teams that qualified. Only Rockford- continued from page 20 Guiford at 308, St. Viator at 309 and Deerfield at 310, scored better. "I always felt confident they could play to their capabilities. They are working as a team now, and are encouraging each other." Kellogg is 6,444 yard course with 72 as par. <> "It's a pretty challenging course," said Cuda. "Ac curacy around the greens will be the key. The kids that hit the five or four-iron shots will win. OCTOBER continued from page 20 do real well," said Vehring. Last year was disap pointing to Vehring, as well as the whole squad. They came so close to becoming the top team in the state. The second chance to accomplish the ultimate of high school eolf at Peoria means a lot to ehring. • The team wasn't playing as well as it was capable of at the Fox Valley meet. At regionals, the team was M a r i a n C e n t r a l Woodstock. "The doubles team spots should be up for grabs. It should be an interesting situation," said Gray. Gray is hoping his number one and two doubles teams come through with state berths. Of the two, however, Gray ,feels Sarah Prust and Sara Bird at number one might have the best chance. uepulis, on the other hand, is looking for her number one doubles team of Gail Jakubicek and Sheri Scavo to qualify. The pair posted a 5*2 NWSC record over the season. ^ "They have just as reasonable chance as anybody else," said Cepulis. "No particular doubles team will blow everybody a way." Both Gray and Cepulis are hoping their number two teams will come through too. Sisters Kathy Hartjes and Debbie Hartjes will compete for Johnsburg, while Melanie Smith and Kris Wolff fill the lineup for McHenry. The tournev's number one singles spot is all but clin ched, according to Gray. Kathy Meyer of Woodstock lost only two matches all season long and defeated last year's state qualifyer, Crystal Lake South's Kelly Dodge 6-0, 6-0. Gray would like to see his and number one singles player, Kris Sorling, to maybe pick up the consolation title. And if everything goes well, Gray would like to see his Lady Warrior earn the team title. "I would like to see our selves with the sectional trophy," said Gray. "It will probably be Woodstock or ourselves and maybe An tioch. It will be a fight bet ween those three. "The official nod would have to go to Woodstock. For McHenry to win, we have to get Kris Sorling to the qualifying round and get both doubles advanced far enough. The key is if Melissa Rhode (number two singles) can pick up one or |wo vic tories. She could pick up a let's talK Fox Valley Conference Boys Football Conf. Because of new IHSA rules, Neuman will be at slight disadvantage in his auest for a good showing, ecause his SI at thei regionals didn't qualify him inaividually for sectionals, he couldn't qualify for the state meet individually, or can he earn medalist honors at the state meet. The rule change was made to prevent overcrowding on the state meet golf courses. A olfer, no matter how well is team plays, must play well both regionals and sectionals. Neuman would have broken the top 10 at Pinecrest at the regionals, if it wasn't Jot a strange development. On one of the holes, his ball lay next to a large bush. In order to hit the ball, he bent a branch behind his back. When he returned to the clubhouse afterwards, he was told bending a branch was illegal and a two-stroke penalty. Johnsburg spikers sweep Grant 15-5,15-8 The Johnsburg girls' volleyball team defeated Grant 15-5, 15-8 in front of a Johnsburg Parents Night crowd. "It was nice way for the seniors to end their homestand," said Johnsburg coach Sharal Koenigseder. She watched her Skyhawks raise its Northwest Suburban record to 13-0 and 19-5 overall. The Lady Skyhawks prepare for regionals which will be held Tuesday in Rock- ford. "Grant did not put up much of a block which made it pretty easy for out spikers," Koenigseder added. Theresa Hauck had 13 serves, with six going for aces. Debbie Tvaroh had 10 serves and three aces. Julie Anderson had six spikes and three kills, while Michelle Swartzloff had nine spikes and two kills. Kelly Hart had five kills. "Missi Christi, Michelle Swartzloff and Sarah Knight all did a nice job passing," Koenigseder said.
