The object of a special meeting of the City Council was the naasing and adoption of an ordinance to facilitate and make legal the handling of the $8,914.95 refund from the state department for that portion of the pavement on Elm street which the state had taken over and which was paid for in the beginning by the property owners. It is expected tne money will be here soon and will be distributed in the same proportion to the property owners as the assessment roll showed they paid for the installation of the pavement. A total of 37,984 Keople were given new ration ooks during the two-day registration period, where the 1930 census showed a total of 37,311 people in the county. Woodstock led in the number of registrations and McHenry was fourth with 4,841, close behind Crystal Lake and Harvard. In elections held at the local high school, class of­ ficers were elected. The freshmen chose Hugh Murphy as president; sophomores, Paul Bonslett, Jr., president; juniors, Charles Martin, president and seniors, Harold Michels, president. Among '• graduates of the Medical Service School, Carlisle Barracks, Pa., was Capt. Lawrence R. Murphy, who received his degree from the Chicago College of Dental Surgery several years ago. 25 YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of October 31, 1958). "EVM-ergreen has been selected to be McHenry's new telephone exchange name when dial service is introduced here late in 1959. The exchange name is an integral part of modern dial service and "EV"-ergreen was selected after a careful search for a name which will fit McHenry's dial system. Before being adopted, the name was discussed with civic officials and business' people. New dial telephone numbers here will consist of the name "EV"-ergreen followed by five figures. To make a local call, telephone users will dial "EV" and the five figures of the number. Royal Bernier was * ap­ pointed-chairman, and Mrs. Herbert Engdahl, treasure , of the newly formed group of citizens interested in a )lanning commission for the IcHenry area. No name has yet been selected for the committee formed at a meeting in the high school. 10 YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of October 31, 1973). A figure of $10,000 has been set as the goal for the McHenry County Viscount drum and bugle coros. They hope to realize tnat am­ bitious figure through a fun fair, fund raising dinner and a drum corps show in the spring. Money realized will be used to purchase new uniforms and to replace equipment, some of which is more than 20 years old. The McHenry corps is not seeking a large sponsor, but rather a number of people who are interested in investing in some of the county's young citizens. The McHenry area to school Band and Choral festival will be held at McHenry West campus. The students will rehearse all day and give a nerformance that evening. Guest conductor will be John Leighty of McHenry, who will work with the 209-piece festival band. A fourth quarter touch­ down enabled the Dundee Cardunals to defeat the Warriors 23 to 16 at McHenry.
