The Student Life Committee of MCC has invited the eight candidates vying for three seats on the seven-member MCC Board of Trustees to participate in a session designed to aid county residents in making an educated choice when tney enter the voting booth Tuesday, Nov. 8. Beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the MCC Student Lounge, candidates will each be allowed a total of 10 minutes for a presentation and answering questions. Candidates for the three six- year terms, in the order in which they will appear on the ballot, are: Eugene Meyer, Marengo (incumbent); Herbert W. Lutter, Cary (incumbent); G. Using national reports • recently released on education as a basis for discussion, the commission is focusing on the following themes to attain information on specific topics from the public: -How adequate are the state's expectations for in­ structional standards and pupil performance across all ages? -How should time in school be specified to assure ef­ fective instruction and meet our expectations? -How 'can we recruit, educate, retain and reward more good teachers and educational administrators? -How can we assure that our schools are adequately preparing youth for higher education and-or the public- private employment sector? Even though specific topics have been assigned for each commission meeting, in­ dividuals may discuss other educational issues that are of State education workshop at Marian Insight Two, a professional education workshop, will be held at Marian Central Catholic High School Friday, Oct. 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The workshop is sponsored with the cooperation of the Illinois StateBoard of Education, the office of the "Regional Superintendent of McHenry County, McHenry County Curriculum Council, and Marian Central Catholic High School. The workshop en­ compasses areas of education that would interest both primary and secondary teachers, those working as administrators, curriculum directors, pupil personnel staffs, andf otheirjpdpport staff SOtne topic# to * be covered include Creative Writing, Basic Skills - Math, Assertive Discipline, and Gifted Education. Professionals in each area will use various techniques to present materials and concents. The workshop promises to send par­ ticipants back to the schoolroom with useful materials and strategies. Funds to ,support this -activity were provided in £paekV by Chafer n ECIA (Block Grant) to the Illinois State Board of Education. Lunch will be available at Marian Central cafeteria between sessions from 11:30 and 12:30 p.m. concern to them. The commission was created last summer by Senate Joint Resolution 61 that directs the commission to study the problems related to elementary and secondary education, to explore ways to improve education, and to report its findings and recommendations to the General Assembly by Oct. 1, 1984. The State Board of Education is responsible for , providing staff assistance to the commission.
