"It * was a little frustrating/' said Cuda. "They seemed nervous on every little thing." The only other golfer from the Fas Valley Conference in the tounament, Shawn Larson shot a 160. This year's state tour nament was hit with a controversy over a new rule. The rule prohibited those players who missed making medalist honors in either the regionals or sectionals from taking medalist honors at the state meet. That meant many players who played badly in the regionals and sectionals, but made qualification through their teams, couldn't place among the medalist, no matter how well they continued from page 22 scored. That group iacluded Tom Neumann. He failed to make medalist honors in both the regionals and sectionals. Chris Vehring, was able to qualify for the meet with medalist honors at the regionals and sectionals. "I don't think it's a very good rule," Cuda said. "Each tournament should have separate medalists. It takes a little incentive off." Joliet Catholic's Tom Brown actually turned in the the top score in the tour nament with a 147 total and, 74 Saturday, but was ineligible for medalist honors because of the rule. "I'm very satisfied with this group of boys. Very satisfied. There is some pressure involved, but people don't understand that until they get down there." There was no first-quarter blowout. There was no 30-odd pjint halftime lead. There was no substituting freely midway through the third quarter. <For the first time since their opening game of the season, Marian Central's Hurricanes found themselves in a rough, tough, tight game. Trie cast for Marian was basically the same as it has been, but the supporting cast from Grayslake aid itself well, albeit as a group of courageous stunt men. However, mark three-and- one-half stars (on a stale of 1 to 4) for Marian as key senior leadership down the stretch and seven Grayslake fumbles set the plot in the second half as the seventh-ranked Hurricanes dumped the Rams, 32-8, in a bruising Northwest Suburban Conference battle at George Harding Field Friday night. The victory clinches a spot in the playoffs for Marian and ensures at least a tie for the Northwest Suburban Conference championship. If the 'Canes were to lose to Lake Zurich next week and Johnsburg were to GATORS from page 22 Crystal Lake regained the lead late in the second quarter. South drove the ball from the Warrior 37-yard line. The drive was topped off with an eight- yard touchdown run by Meyer. Broadhead kicked the PAT for a South 14-8 lead. * McHenry tied the contest on its second possession in the second half. Chris Anderson fell on a South fumble on the Gators 21-yard line. Two plays later. Hill struck Radic with a 26-yard touchdown pass. Hill, however, was unable to complete the two- point conversion pass to take the lead. The final South touchdown came on a 47-yard pass form Meyer to Jim Hufford in the fourth quarter. Broadhead's kick was blocked. defeat Grant, the two teams would tie, but Marian, on the basis of its victory over John sburg would still make the playoffs. It was not a typical Marian win on a very atypical night, however. A string of events beginning in the second quarter led many to wonder if a force from beyond was controlling the same. Consider: The lights on the northeast corner of the field went out midway through the second period causing a short delay. After several minutes and finding out it would take 20 minutes for the lights to warm refegeeblew the ball dead when found more success in tne air happenings aside, where they racked up 115 yards, ed it could play "The kids playea hard and assure was on. A they played well," Hurricane the lights to was tackled. However, Hart&eb didn't have the ball as Dan Fortin scambled for six yards on the play. The inad vertent whistle caused a replay of the down. All cosmic Marian showed it could play when the pressure was on. A hard-charging Grayslake defense forced Marian quar terback Chuck HartUeb out of the pocket on several occasions causing Hartlieb his poorest passing night of tue season (6- for-17). Several of those passes were thrown away, however, to avoid big losses of yardage. The fumbles. Marian recovered two otthem. The poor snaps resulted in 61 yards in losses including two for 24 yards each. The Rams ended up with net 34 yards rushing, but found more success in the air whore ̂ they played well," Hurricane coach Don Penza said. "Not to take anything away from Ice. rihey played a Grayslake. down in the dark. Two plays after the lights went out, a referee lost his card to keep trAck of the teams' timeouts, and simultaneously lost the small sandbag he uses to mark an out-of-bounds play or the touching of a ball Another delay. Halfway through the halftime In the third quarter, Hurricanes' fullback Andy Hartlieb gave such a convincing fake of a handoff, that the turned the tide in favor of the 'Canes Hartlieb scored on a four-yard run and tossed a touchdown pass to Dan Fortin, while Darren Fortin intercepted two passes (returning one for a touchdown) and recovered a fumble late in the to turn away a GL threat. Grayslake, which ran all of its plays from the shotgun for mation (the quarterback took the snap five to seven yards behind the line of scrimmage to allow more time) found the strategy backfired as seven of the snaps were poor resulting in helluva ballgame. e let us know what we look uke when we arent consistent. We must be consistentl̂ ready." Pema let the reins on his team go during the contest as Chuck Hartlieb made every offensive call and Darren Fortin made each defensive call. "The kids did the game entirely on their own. We puroosely didn't give them a report on them (the Rams). ISey played the game as they saw it on the fuw » Penza said the Hurricanes probably will have little or no scouting report in the upcoming playoffs and that his players will nave to react to situations for the first time on the field. "They've got to learn to do what they think is right as the see it," he said.
