0 McHenry stands in Woodstock's way Hie Warriors of coach Joe Schlender can be the tpoilers in the fox Valley tt^«^cande, eauhe Hie Streaks need this ball game to become conference champions. If Woodstock wins and Crystal Central defeats South, the Streaks will be champions by virtue of an earlier win over Central 28-20. . Hie Blue Streaks have two losses, Riverside-Brookfield and DundeeCrown (a team the Warriors defeated). Another loss for the Blue Streaks will eliminate a state playoff position. Never has a team wit!) three losses qualified for the playoffs. to talking with the Bhie Streak mentor fi^Bradriaw on Tuesday, he is not taking the Waxfiors for panted. Too many times in the past the Streaks have had a chance for a championship in the six-year-old Fox Valley, only to fail by the wayside in what would be called a mild unset. The Blue Streaks have yet to win the Fox Valley Conference crown. We could probably use the old phrase, "always a bridesmaid, but never a bride." That fit the Blue Streaks. out the records when these two tftfms meet. It is one of the oldest rivalries in this part of the state. It is generally a hard fought game, whoever wins the contest. For all of you old Warriors, this is the game and I expect to see a lot of you fans cheering on the Warriors tonight. Disappointments come, but life still goes on. The Warriors of coach Chuck Cuda finished eighth in the state golf tourney.. A bad Saturday for the locals dropped them from fourth to eighth. But nevertheless, when you think of over 300 teams competing, the Warriors were in the final 12. A tin of the fedora to coach Cuda and his golfers. We at McHenry don't expect state champions. All the fans ask is that you do your best. - Hie coach and the golfers may be disappointed, but Warrior fans are Rabbitt On the Sideline ^SSfoTyour season. The New Triers, Loyola's and all the rest stayed home and watched television, while McHenry was competing for the state title. ***** y Tomorrow "Hutch" will take his Running Warriors to Schaumburg for the sectional cross country meet Last week the Warriors finished second to old rival Crystal Lake Central. Hie flu bug has hit the Warrior but the veteran coach hopes \ by tomorrow all will be ready to go. Running Warriors have a very successful season thus far, winning numerous championships (county. FVC, Wauconda and St. Charles Invitationals). In the past three years, the Warriors have lost only two duel meets. Even the great York teams of Joe Newton can't make that claim. The first five teams tomorrow qualify, along with five indivduals. there will be 16 teams competing for the five berths to the state finals. In talking with coach Bill Hutchinson the other night, he mentioned, "we hope to do our best and qualify for the state finals. Getting to state is our main concern for the season. All the rest is secondary." We, along with all Warrior fans hope • the veteran coach gets Ids wish tomorrow, and on to state next weekend. ****** A humble Bill Day appeared at my home the other day to return our "monetary trophy" on the Notre Dame versus Southern California game. The trophy has been at the Day residence for some years. The Irish are on the move, and only if they can qualify and win a bowl same this season, wfil my trophy case be comnlete. 1 ****** A big thanks to our favorite person, Mrs. S. I. H., for getting the old boy away from the table last week. He was a pleasant surprise to the press box. 1 can't understand why be was upset with my orange hat. I thought all Irishmen wore the orange Anyway, he didn't bring the Warriors luck, but we eqjoyed his company, his gift of a big dgar and his wit and humor. We are looking forward to the basketball season when the Walshes will be regular customers of press row - we booe. ****** This is the final weekend of regular --•mi football for the high schools.
