The Skyhawks carried a 17-7 lead going into the fourth quarter, against the Grant Bulldogs. All Johnsburg had to do was hold that lead ana a IHSA playoff berth would be sewed up. Instead, the Skyhawks watched Grant return an interception for one touchdown and quarterback Jim Taylor pass for a second. The Johnsburg season ended in a 21-17 defeat and playoff plans wiped-out. The Skyhawk season ends with a record wins and two losses in the west Suburban Conference overall. It was Johnsburg's first winning season since the school's inception in 1978. Grant also finishes with a 5-2 NWSC record, 5-4 overall. Johnsburg and Grant end up sharing second place in the NWSC, with Marian holding the conference title. "It'£ a shame," said John sburg coach Randy Oberembt. "Not to take anything away from the Grant athletes, but our players played their hearts out. But that's football. Sometimes a ball will take a funny bounce on you." The ball took a funny bounce for the Skyhawks more than just once. The big bounce, was a 36- yard pass completed by Taylor with Johnsburg holding onto a slim 17-14 lead with less than two minutes left in the same. On the play before, John sburg's Bob Bentz had sacked Taylor for a 16-yard loss. Grant was facing fourth down, with 22 yards needed for the first, on the Grant 19-yard line. Taylor went back to pass and just threw it up towards one of his receivers ana several Johnsburg defenders two passes before that play. The first pass also went for a touch down. Johnsburg had dominated statistically all day. The Skyhawks outgained the Bulldogs 339 yards to 206, with Johnsburg credited with 19 first downs to Grant's four. Johnsburg's Jim Bentz rushed for 127 yards, and finished with 1,149 yards for the season. Jim Hopp rushed for 53 yards and finished with 757 yards. Quar terback Jeff Jayko completed eight of 17 passes for 115 yards. "It was turning point of the game. It was an unusual play." Tavlor had onlv comoleted "We had a number of op-" portunties to score and put the game away. You can't take anything away from the Grant kids," said Oberembt. Probably the most damaging mistake was a Jayko in terception with 7:38 left in the game. George Shields of the Bulldogs picked off the pass and returned it 68 vards for the touchdown. That made the score 17-14.% Both teams traded after that score, s game, Grant regained possession after a Jayko pass fell incomplete on a fourth and two play on the 27- yard line of the Bulldogs. On Grants first play, Taylor's pitch aided up behind Rowden and fumbled. But the ball rolled out of bounds for a two-yard loss. A six-yard run by Chris Gast was wiped out by the Bentz' sack. Then came Taylor's 36-yard miracle pass, with the ball resting on the Skyhawk 45-yard line, Taylor got hot and connected onpasses of 12, 7, 7, 17, 17 and 4. The last was fumbled by Grant's Lutz, but John Laskowski regtained it for the Bulldogs on the two-yard line. On the next play, Taylor again found Lutz, this time for the winning touch down. The Skyhawks had 18 seconds to comeback with, but two Jayko passes fell incoiaplete and a sack sunk any chances. Johnsburg opened up the ;ame with a 80-yard scoring ssion of the game. A seven-yard pass by Jayko to Tom Meehan and a 21- yard run by Bentz set up the score. It was Bentz again for the score, on a 18-yard sweep into the end-zone with 7:02 left in the first quarter. Mike Majercik kicked the point-after and Johnsburg haa a 7-0 lead. That lead was short lived. On Grant's first possession after a Johnsburg punt, Taylor threw a short pass to Lutz, who broke loose and ran 61-yards for the tying touchdown with 24 seconds left on the clock. Johnsburg regained the lead in the second quarter. On a first-and-10 play at midfield, Jayko connected with Meehan again, this time for a 26-yaxft gain. Four plays later, Jayfao again connected with Meehan, this time for a nine-yarder to tfife one-yard line. Jayko finished off the drive by taking it in himself for tlfe touchdown.
