|VU;i: 21 • I'l.AINDKAI KH • FRIDAY. DKCKMBER 2.1983 This is the football capital of Illinois With the Marian Central Hurricanes and Woodstock Blue Streaks both winning state football titles last weekend, it made this area the football capital of the state. Schools in both the Fox Valley and Northwest Suburban Conferences can take pride in their champions. It proves football played in these two conferences does not have to take a back seat to anyone. It was a thrill for the many Warrior fans to see the two teams emerge as state champions. I called Coach Bob Bradshaw of the Blue Streaks on Tuesday to offer my congratulations, and he said, "I'm still on cloud nine. It was a great thrill for the coaches, team and Streak fans. The tough competition in the Fox Valley conference was what really made us champions." I'm sure coach Don Penza of the Hurricanes can say the same about the Northwest Suburban. Anyway. I know I speak for Warrior fans in congratulating two fine football teams from Woodstock. On the Sideline! Dick Rabbitt •• With Fox Valley play opening tonight, coach Ken Ludwig must get some outside shooting from his team if they are going to be a contender this season. Lack of shooting hurt the Warriors in the Sycamore Tourney, and as a result, lost twice. Let's hope the Warriors get on the winning track tonight against the Cary- Grove Trojans at Buckner Gym. The Hassling Warriors lost to Harvard and Mundelein last Saturday at Harvard; they open conference play tonight at Cary. Again, here is hoping for a fine victory. Pat Wirtz and his Lady Warriors open play tomorrow at West Campus at 1:30 p,m. when they host Round Lake. The veteran coach cdn look over his material »for a month or so before play starts in the Fox Valley in early January. Mike Shan ah an will take his swimmers to Hoffman Estates tomorrow morning for the Hoffman Estates Invitational, and then Tuesday travel to Waukegan East to meet a tough opponent. Later, we should have some more information on these teams of the Warriors. • • The Fox Valley conference did not set the world on fire in pre-season play through the Thanksgiving holidays. Only one team came through with a winning record and that is the Warriors opponent tonight, the Trojans of Cary-Grove. They are now 4-1 on the season after going 2-21 last year. The cohference as whole, won 11 and lost 15. Not a very good record for non-conference play. May have to take SIH suggestion after all and go nation wide. I picked all six winners in the state high school football finals. Will admit I did a little extra research on the teams playing, but some luck was involved too. Our good friend Dave Mihevc, after a little coaxing, again came out with his picks for the Fox Valley this season In the past several years, he has been quite accurate. Although we disagree on some this season, he stands by Ws picks. Woodstock with 9-3, Central and Dundee-Crown 8-4, the Warriors 6-6, Jacobs and South both at 4-8 and trailing Cary-Grove with a 3-9 record. . -- || Once again we go down memory lane. This time to the 1970-71 North Suburban game between the Warriors and Dundee. The Warriors, led by Jerry Miller's 18 points and Ron Miller's 17, stopped Cards 59-41. Outstanding was the defense that held Morningstar, who was averaging 21 points per game to a mere eight. McHenry 59 Dundee 41 „ McHenry: Harbecke 5-1-4 11, Hoiser 1- 2-3 4, Gehrke 1-1-1 3, R. Miller 8-1-117, J. Miller 9-0-218, Hoffman 3-0-1 6, totals 27- 5-12 59. Dundee: Morning Star 1-6-18, Meyer 4- 0-2 8, Carter 4-2-0 10, Garlieb 0-2-2 2, Stepina 1-1-2 3, Whitehouse 0-2-0 2, Miller 2-0-1 4, Nielson 2-0-0 4, totals 14-13-8 41. McHenry 15161414 --5» Dundee 9 81212 -- 41 let's talk Majercik comes through for Johnsburg NO CLEAR-CUT FAVORITE continued from page 22 his return from a pre-season knee injury. "We are not real big, but we do have decent quickness. We will use a lot of people to keep pressure on our opponets," said Collins. He feels Woodstock, Dundee- Crown, and maybe Central will be the teams to beat in the Fox Valley. But knowing the veteran and popular coach, watch out for the Gators. The Dundee-Crown Chargers will have the same problems that faced football coach Bob Carlson - players from Dundee and Crown becoming a unit. Veteran coach Jim Hinkle said. "We should be representative with all the players we have. We may not have a set lineup all year." On paper, the Chargers should be a contender in the Fox Valley, with seniors Tim Stocker (6-3), Jay Curt right (6-5), 230 pound Todd Mitter (6-3), Ron Lorenz (5-10) and Mike White (5- mm w**tr conditio m DO RENT WATER SOFTENERS mm i mm* iitcMksWow t« Site r UfiM Up** 4« > #-Fiwr. it-- - (MMU Dally F.«.«flal Grain CnwH|f W«t«« A..ll»ku Ou'inf I* Ml Wat, , Utad To Wartlng Fmrtt Of Valva Oparata In felt Waiai A« All Tim-- IWvtl»f Cailly Service? Several juniors, who have already have some playing time this season are; Dan Schultz (6- 5), Joe Dougherty (5-10) and Brad Williams (6-2). Hinkle went on to add, "we have size, speed and shooting ability." EDITOR'S NOTE - This FVC analysis will continue next week with previews on Jacobs and Woodstock. , With the loss of an experienced starting center, Johnsburg basketball coach Ben Beck knew the key for a successful season would come from his remaining four returning letterwinners. Top performances from those four would be crucial. In the Skyhawks first three games, one particular returning letterwinner held up his part of the bargain to the fullest. He not only helped lead Johnsburg to two victories in three Marian Holiday Tourney games, but he caught the attention of the op posing coaches. They named him to the all-tournament team. Joe Majercik, a 6-foot senior guard, played what he himself called "the best in his high school career." Joe, the son of Chuck and Nancy Majercik, helped the Skyhawks nail down its first victory of the season against Burlington Central with a 22 point performance. He came back with 15 in a win over Rich mond and scored 18 in a loss to Genoa-Kingston. "I played a lot better this year," said Majercik, com paring last year in the Marian Tournament and this year. Like this year, the Skyhawks won the tourney title. With three games under his belt, Majercik leads the teams in scoring, field goals and free throws. He has a 18.6 scoring average, hit 23 of 51 field goals for 45 percent and hit 10 of 17 free thows for 59 percent. He also grabbed 21 rebounds and committed only seven tur novers. Joe Majercik ATHLETE of the week After the Burlington game, Beck showed his praise of his senior by saying, "Joe just happened to be in the right place at the right time today. He played both ends real hard. He does a real nice job. I'm real pleased with that." Majercik only has one goal for the season, and that is for the team to win the Northwest Suburban Conference title. He feels the Skyhawks have as good a chance as anybody in the conference. Majercik does plan to attend a college after graduation this spring, but has not decided on one or if he plans to continue his athletic career collegiately. aliVL LrLliVLL 9003 SOUTH RT. 12 RICHMOND, ILL 815/678-4344 MON FRI 8 30 7 S A i 6 30 5 SUN i 1 -4 6Vt" Worm-Drive Saw With 2" cut depth at 90°, for ripping making cross cuts. / 3^7 1 \23510i m 23511 REG. $229.95 YOUR CHOICE 7%"Worm-Drive Saw Dependable, with full safety features.
