Chanukah is the Hebrew word for "dedication". This observance has been traditionally known as "The Feast of Dedication" or "The Feast of Lights". All traditions have an origin and Chanukah is rich in history. In the 2nd century B.C.E. the Jews in Judea. were being persecuted by Antiochus IV, a Greek despot. The Jews said Antiochus IV aimed to end the religious and cultural separatism of the Jews and bring Judea into his Hellenic empire. GIVE CANTATA , "Sing and Rejoice", a Christmas cantata by Robert W. Thygerson, is the thrust at the choir rehearsals at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 401 St. John's Road, Woodstock. Members of the senior choir, junior choir, angel choir and the "Bells of Glory" handbell choir are working hard at their rehearsals so they can present this beautiful cantata to the public Sunday, Dec. 4, at 7:30 p.m. , to force them to reject their gods and convert to the polytheistic religion of the Greeks. A small band of dedicated Jews, under the brillant leadership of Judah the Mac- cabee, fought courageously against overwhelming odds. In 168 B.C.E., after three years, the "Macabees" won their stnigle. Highlighting their victory was the recapture of Jerusalem and the Holy Temple. Hie Temple was cleansed of pagan defilement and rededicated to God. After the Temple was recovered," there was only enough oil to light the lamp for one day. But a miracle allowed the oil to keep the lamp lit for 8 days, as new oil was sought. In commemoration of these stirring events, Judah Mac- r cabee decreed that on the same day every year thereafter, Jews • are to celebrate Chanukah. To Jew and non-Jew alike, the ! •./ moral of Chanukah is that there exists no power on earth able to M crush the free, aspiring spirit of; man, fit: Locally, the Sunday School efc-., the McHenry County Jewish :n Congregation will celebrates! Chanukah by presenting plays,- song and dance to friends and;:- family on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 10 » a.m. In addition, members of the Lubavich community will entertain. In their homes, Jewish families will exchange gifts and light a candle at each nightfall during the eight-day - observance. • . Advent wreath Christmas observance The time for Advent Wreaths is once again at hand. This year Nov. 27 the first Sunday of Advent, when many families light, one upright candle in a green wreath on the center of Sunday's dinner table. From one candle burned on Nov. 27, two on Dec. 4, three on the eleventh, these families will burn the traditional four candles Dec. 18. Seven days before Christmas. All these ob servances are a reminder of the coming of the major ec- i clesiastical event of the Christian calendar. The Advent Wreath has • become a colorful and happy • means of remembering and ! preparing for Christmas in ; advance, and brings cheerful ; and Christian thoughts to the ; dining room of millions of famil ies for weeks pr ior to ' Christmas.
