"A family in Michigan ac tually named a child Finis, supposing that it would be their last; but they afterwards happened to have a daughter and two sons whom they called: Addenda, Appendix and Sup plement." Am thinking of my Aunt Katie. She used to hurry and put on a clean apron when she saw a visitor approaching. It has been called to my at tention that a picture of me with little first graders last week looked like I had a cigar in my mouth. No way! It was an illusion. Close examination shows the handle of my cane was in line to create the illusion. I have been known to smoke a cigar on occasions, but this wasn't one of those times. Now that we have made a wreck of the Thanksgiving turkey, our thoughts can turn toward Christmas. I'm the worlds worst shopper so have to rely on you-know-who to get the job done. There was a time when I used to meet the late and kweable George "Stubby" Justen in Bolger's Drug Store on Dec. 24th and get Tom to help us. Under pressure, you can get a lot done in a short time. It was out at the Longhorn, where the salad bar is more popular than most liquor bars, that we met the A1 Phannenstills and part of their family. A1 was telling how he gets up at 6 o'clock each morning and goes for a long walk. ^ Getting up early is a carry over from the days when he had to get out to milk the cows. The long walk prompted me to remark that his legs must be strong. He explained. When he gets tired walking, he runs! In these days of high unem ployment, it is good to ride along a highway and see a "Men Working" sign. We have one reader who wants us to write about hap penings 10 years ago instead of 40 years down the road. • -• • >• That is the only such request we ever received. Of course, the man has lived here only 8 years. Most readers, young and old, want stories of the far past. Twice Told Tales lists items of 10 years ago, but one of these days we may search out news of that period. We aim to please. TUs neighborhood of old folks is changing. We didn't see the stork flying over, but he left a bundle of joy at the Bruce Harbecke home. Circling back, the big bird arranged another blessed event in the Ben and Molly Beck home. Happiness is a baby. It was on Friday that Marian Central's football team showed class In winning the State Championship in the school's division. Saturday found Woodstock High bringing another cham pionship. The City riding high. of Woodstock is Of course, Marian covers the entire county in enrollment so has fans in all parts. Strange as it might seem to some old grads of McHenry High, everybody was pulling for both teams. "You don't hardly find those kind no more". Before toasters, we used to take a lid off the wood burning cook stove, stick a slice fcf bread at the end of a long fork flftd keep turning. . ^ < x -- Coals in a fireplace « *< also turned out some folden brown toast - if you were careful not to burn it. ! There was a lot to be s#id for those old cook stoves. Homemade bread coming out of those ovens seemed to have a special taste and aroma In my high school days, Woodstock High was the largest school in the County. They had powerful basketball teams and small schools dreamed of knocking them off. We have a toaster in our house that was given to us when we were married. The chrome still shines like the day we received it. As Georgie Gobel would say, it PV ' t-*t. Hnm Some people are so thoughtful Marian Doenecke sent a nice note about our Thanksgiving column. V Such cruelty! They tell you not to eat anything for 14 hours, then come to the lab and we will stick a needle into you so we can draw blood. Nina Fortin was the sticker. I was the stickee.
