Recently deer have been killed in various areas of the county, but not all deer are killed in collisions ; sometimes they are lust stunned or injured with broken bones. In either case, collisions with deer must be reported like any other traffic accident. According to information • provided by the McHenry County Conservation District's Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Project, when a deer is killed, the dnver of the vehicle involved has the first chance to take possession of the carcass. If the driver does not want the deer, any Illinois resident may claim it. If two or more deer are killed in a collision, the driver is eligible to poasess as many carcasses as he wishes. However, spotted fawns may not be taken under any cir cumstances. A person possessing a deer killed in a vehicle collision must report it within 24 hours to the Illinois Department of Con- servation, Region 11,110 James Road, Spring Grove, (815)-675- 2385. The office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, If the deer is killed weekends or holidays, the report must be made on the nest regular workday. In McHenry County, there may be help for an injured deer. Treatment and care » available through the MCCD's wildlife rehabilitation project. Conservation authorities urge drivers to be particulary alert for deer crossing roads at thia time of the year. The MCCD offered the following suggestions to motorists: -Reduce speed and be alert for deer at the edge of especially at dawn and Make a mental you have seen deer _ Watch carefully going around curves or when approaching favored deer crossings. If you see a deer cross safely in front of your vehicle, alow and expect more to follow. Dont assume that a deer in the road will run off as your vehicle jour horn unless it it use looks as if your vehicle will collide with the deer Faraway noises may confuse the deer Close noise may produce an extra burst of speed from the animal. Heed deer warning signs. They are placed where deer-vehicle collisions are likely to occur. Conservation district officials remind residents that laws regarding the possession of wildlife were formulated to protect people and wildlife. Without these laws, wildlife could become the victims of commercial enterprise, or even of good in- citizens wantins to help an individual The needa and ABB wildlife are very specify, ac- . and authorities should if persons have encounters with wildlife.' CM M •^8" rrSe rrni Each year many soybean growers face the same question: Do I use beans from the bin to plant or do I buy new bagged seed? Many growers reach the conclusion that bin-run seed is a good cost-curbing option. But, studies by researchers' in Ohio and Illinois show that choosing bin-run seed may actually be false economy, and a weather- stressed 1983 growing season may hammer home the point. Results of tests on three dif- "7//J li ferent farms by Ohio State University reseracher show that over a three-year period the yield advantage of new bagged seed over bin-run seed was 3.1 bushels per acre. Results of a 17-year study of the Illinois Soybean Yield contest were similar to thpse in the Ohio tests. Iffee study compared the yield rem* of 577 farmers who used new bagged seed with the results of 412 farmers who used bin-run seed during the years of 1964-1981.
