PAGE 14 - PLAINDE ALER - WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7.1983 News Remembering When... Costume party in McHenry 'tent factory' Safety hints: Heavy holiday traffic increases accident risk BY SECRETARY OF STATE JIM EDGAR Heavy traffic during the Christmas holidays makes driving more difficult and in creases the risk of accidents. Last year, 20 lost their lives and 1,666 were injured in 4,052 traffic accidents over the Christmas holiday. Don't drink and drive. More than half of all traffic deaths are alcohol-related. If you've been drinking, let someone else drive pr call a cab. If you are going home for the holidays this year and your travel plans include driving, please take the following precautions: 1-Wear your safety belt. Children under age four must ride in an approved child safety seat. Hie new child passenger protection law also requires that children four or five years of age must be in a child safety seat or safety belt. 2-Plan ahead for your trip, allow plenty of time and make regular rest stops along the way. 3-Stop driving when you feel drowsy. A cup of coffee, fresh air and stretching will help you stay awake. If you are very sleepy, take a nap. 4-Be sure your vehicle is in good operating condition, especially with the potential for bad weather. Have a good supply of windshield washer solution before you start. Have a safe and happy holiday season. Don't become one of next year's statistics. Obviously this group has gathered for a costume party although some were dolled up in their Sunday- go-to-meetin' clothes. The picture was taken in the brick building at the northeast corner of Riverside Drive and Pearl Street, where Tom Thonneson made awnings. He also made tents for the U.S. Army. Several in the group were recognized with help from Al Vales, Alex Justen and Hugh Kirk. Maybe some readers can identify others.
