IMS Mental health agencies meet on alcohol, substance abuse The Family Center for Alcohol-Substance Abuse recently presented an all-dayv workshop at the 1983 Fall Conference of the Illinois Association of Community Mental Health Agencies. "The focus of the presentation", according to Sara Boomhower, coordinator of the specalized program of Family Service k Community Mental Health Center for McHenry County, 4'was to present an overall view of the illness of chemical dependency and its early stage symptoms and diagnosis." Maureen Dorgan and Debbie Pockat, therapists with the program, added that "discussion further focused on the differences and special needs of the chemically dependent adolescent and recognition of chemical dependency as a family illness." According to Scott Campbell, a member of the conference committee, "participants of the workshop were most interested in the program's uniquely structured group approach to the chemically dependent person and family members." Sara Boomhower explained that . the Family Center for Alcohol-Substance Abuse "has a highly structured 3-phase treatment approach to chemical dependency problems. The first phase which is an education-information group is designed to ̂serve all family members. This 4-week group helps participants recognize the harmful involvement with chemical intoxicants and to understand the impact of chemical dependency upon themselves and their loved ones. The second phase is - a combination support and education group for adults and older adolescents of both sexes who are .experiencing life problems . due to their chemical dependency. This is an 8-week group program. Also included in phase two is a family treatment group to assist family members in understanding chemical dependency, their responses to it, detachment, and in enriching their own recovery program. Phase two is sobriety support group, which is ongoing for persons returning from inpatient treatment, or who have had a minimum of three months ~ sobriety, attend AA 2-3 times weekly and have an AA sponsor."
