DECEMBER 1, INS .New license revocation policy announced in state Persons arrested for serious driving offenses who have caused accidents resulting in death or major injury would have their drivers licenses revoked quickly under a new policy announced by Secretary of State Jim Edgar. Edgar said he will ask all 102 Illinois state's attorneys to provide his office on a regular and timely basis with arrest records, coroner's reports and all appropriate evidence in such cases. Currently, licenses are revoked only after the driver has been convicted in court of a serious driving offense, such as drunk driving, reckless homicide, drag racing or leaving the scene of an accident which resulted in death or in jury. Census department to survey labor force Hie U.S. Bureau of the Census will conduct a regular survey on employment and unemployment in this area during the week of Dec. 12-17, according to Stanley D. Moore, director of the Bureau's Regional Office in Chicago. In addition to the usual questions on current em ployment, the December survey will include others concerning hired farm workers. Some of the questions that will be asked concern the number of days hired farm workers did farm and nonfarm work, their wages for farm and nonfarm work, an£^ the number of farm wage worker* migrating to " other * counties and states to do farm work. ^ Households in this area are part of the sample of 72,000 across the country scientifically selected to represent a cross section of all U.S. households, Hie monthly survey is con ducted for the U.S. Department of Labor and provides a con tinuous record of activity in the labor force. The October survey indicated that of the 111.8 million men and women in the civilian labor force, 101.9 million were employed. The nation's unemployment rate was 8.8 percent, down from the 9.3 percent reported in September. Information supplied by in dividuals participating in the survey is kept strictly con fidential by law and the results are used only to compile statistical totals. Under the new policy, once Edgar's office has received information from a state's at torney, the driver's license will be revoked within seven days. Persons whose licenses are revoked can appeal by requesting an administrative hearing. "Those persons arrested for a serious' driving offense like "Villar,? drunk driving which result in death or injury should be taken off the road as soon as possible," Edgar said. "They should not be allowed to drive for months and mnnfha and possibly jeopardise the lives of others in the time it takes the case to come to court. as far as we know HHtnnta will become the first state to routinely revoke licenses for these offenses," he said.
