A rockin' an' thinkin' how things are in this tired ol' world these days, me mind goes back many years, to a period after the first world war when we felt that wars were a thing of the past for us. How wonderful to have peace. Average folks didn't have the affluent livin' enjoyed by so many these, days. Folks ha' b'come used t' a great deal more. Average incomes didn't pervide many extras, 'n we made do wi' what we had. We've come t' a place in society where e'en th' children ha' dollars in their pockets, 'stead o' small change, an' one wonders how it all happened in such a short time. Seems t' us elders it can't be a healthy state fr th' economy. Manufacturers an' merchants seem t' want t' get th' last dollar f'r each item, an' .it used t' be volume sellin' tiiat brought more profit 'n th' way o' t'day's practices. Prices were kept within range o' average in comes, an' th' ^turnover was great, givin' more work t' those employed in pervidin' th' where- wi'-all. Another thing, quality per- vailed,' an' ye only paid more when the quality was best. These days, ye ne'er know until ye have th' product, 'less ye cater t' known brands. Th' ol' rockin' chair gets th' grey matter a workin' an realization o' th' way things are these days. In th' first place, th' population increase has posed so many problems all o'er th' world, f'r that matter. We'd like t' be able t' open our arms t' those oppressed who'd like t' come t' these shores, but seems that th' ol' adage, "Charity b'gins at home," needs priority. Folks who've been born an' lived in our U.S.A. payed taxes an' contributed t' betterin' th' country deserve a better break, seems t' me, 'n those who've FISH FRY FISH Friday Nite You Can Eat $095 SATURDAY BREAKFAST HAM & EGGS $2.99 m/ft ̂ 4228 W. Runnin' away'll ne'er change things, an' only make it harder f'r those who take 'em in. There's cases where some people ha' made it in these United States an' taken their gains back t' their own source an' families. It's a bit hard t' take, f'r us a seem' it happen. A weak excuse is used by those who employ that Americans y don't want th'menial jobs. Only u reason is, they pay lest in wages. We need t' get >? reasonable. We need t' reach :! some reasonable basis on wages, give th' unions some much needed rules an' regulations t' live by, an' get this economy down t' a more balanced state. This country 'd ne'er developed t' excel if things were like they are t'day. There was a time after th' depression when there was work f r all. This granny can't help feettn' that a lot 0' jobs filled by women ha' taken 'em away from men. When time comes when women - b'come mothers, they do a better job at th' most wonderful vocation they'd e'er know, as th' rewards're greater 'n any other. There was a time when - marriage became th' most*! important vocation an' women fe worked at maldn' it successful. In this day, they've missed th' £ goal an' b'come so engrossed wi' themselves, they've frgotten what th' almighty put 'em here for. It's time t' change back t' some good "Ol'-fashioned" ways, me thinks. Grandma Radtke GIVE THE GUT YOU'LL RECEIVE TWICE A WEEK 52 TIMES A YEAR THE MchENRY PLAINDEALER AT $5.00 Off!
