DECEMBER*, 11 The Learning Canter at Johniburg High School haa initiated the uae of a computer software program. The system manages the chatting in and out of books and keeps reoords on student and staff use of the materials in the Learning Center. It utilizes an Apple n computer, two disk drive*, a monitor, a printer and the Booktrak library management program. Materials are checked out by using a light pen interfaced with the terminal. The light pen "scans" bar code labels similar to the Universal Product Code labels found on grocery items. Each book haa a bar code assigned to it, aa does each student and staff member. The books are checked out as a transaction" with the book's barcode number assigned to the borrower's barcode number. One of the most appealing functions of the Booktrak program is the automatic compilation of overdue items. Each day a list of all overdue books is printed. The program also allows overdue notices to be sent via their homeroom designations. This speeds up the return of books and reminds MS Word Encounters for local high school students Students from 87 junior and senior high schools will have the chance to demonstrate how well they'have learned their spelling skills as they compete early in December in the MS Word Encounters offered by the Chicago-Northern Illinois Chapter, National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Other parts of the Booktrak library management program allow new materials to be cataloged and the cards may be printed by the computer in terfaced with the printer. This should greatly reduce the processing time required to get new books ready to circulate. Other portions of the program allow inventory of materials to be done much more rapidly and- keep statistics with regard to how many books a student has checked out in a school term or at - uvfr how many times a book has been checked out. The benefits of the program are many, and result in the Learning Center staff members having more time to assist students in finding materials, doing research, and using educational computer software.
