DECEMBER 9.1W3 gen eral^^™ News Prevent poisoning at home Question -- "I hope this letter arrives in your office in time to help Phillip K. with the problem of whether or not to place his parents in a nursing home. In most homes, the kitchenf laundrv> room and cleaning closet are full of products which contain poison. Tnese should be kept in a locked cabinet and out of children's reach. Take special care that garden chemicals and workshop poisons such as turpentine ana paint thinner are properly stored and labeled and always wash hands immediately after using chemicals. , •, Certain medicines can be deadly for adults as well as children, If not taken as directed. If there are children in the house, medicines should be kept in a locked cabinet. Never use any potential poison without first reading the entire label carefully. In case of accidental poisoning, follow the in structions on the label, par ticularly those which say whether to induce vomiting. Call a doctor, hospital, or poison control center immediately. ATTENTION HOME OWNERS! The answer to high heating bills "The parents should not be uprooted from their own home. It would be a fast way to hasten their death. The children, •together with the parents, . should interview nurses and-or housekeepers with the thought of hiring them to come in and care for the parents. It certainly wouldn't cost the children more than the monthly charges at a nursing home." -- Alice P. Answer -- The problem is a large one and not easily solved. I will tell the story of my mother in a nursing home and why it was decided by me and my brothers to move her from her own home into a nursing home. She lived alone and was 80. We hired a housekeeper who, we discovered, was much experienced in spending other people's money. The housekeeper, Mrs. F. liked to dine well and she preferred dining out where she would not have to do the cooking. It's the most important gas furnace breakthrough in over 40 years. ' | tiijgii" wipp - % - She persuaded my mother to dine at the country club three or • four nights a week. When she did order groceries, they were the most expensive she could buy. The housekeeper didn't have a car and my mother no longer had a car. So the housekeeper engaged a taxi for every trip. With what we paid her, plus the other expenses, we discovered that we could place my mother in the best nursing home in town for less than we were spending with the housekeeper setup. We took her out to the place on an inspection visit. It appeared to us to be ideal. My mother agreed. She said: "I don't have any privacy with Mrs. F. I want to live in that nice nursing home that overlooks the golf course." In those days of 1970, the monthly fee of the nursing home was $600, which was considered locally to be rather expensive. It still was less costly, however, than her own home with a housekeeper and the attendant expenses. It was a perfect place, with privacy, her own phone and her own furniture. She moved in, sat down in her comfortable chair, turned on her TV and looked out over the golf course. "This is my home now," she said. And it was until she died. A good nursing home can be a wonderful place, both for the lonely parent and for the sons and daughters who live in other cities. A good nursing home is a blessing to children and parent alike. Nobody has to worry about a thing, and that means good medical care and a close watch on the care of the patient. Intelligent children, with the help of their doctor, can discover the best nursing home through diligent search. They can periodically inspect the place selected to make certain that all is always well. It is better than having an aged parent 1 live along with a housekeeper in her own house - provided the parent is aware of the facts of the situation. You can't make a parent like a nursing home, no matter how good it is, if she or he doesn't want to like it. It is then that the children have a serious problem, how to persuade the parent to do what is obviously best for health and future. Happiness will come in such a situation only if the children know how to create happiness. Question -- "I am just 66 and I am facing the unpleasant job of applying for my Social Security entitlement. My friends who have told me about going to SS have nothing pleasant to say about it. They didn't like the manners of the SS employees and they say it made them feel old and unwanted. Is that all true?" -- Jane F. Answer -- My next door neighbor told me how it affected her: "I went to SS with my husband and we didn't have to wait in a long line before we were taken care of. "The Social Security person who interviewed me, who examined all my documents, was very nice. She was gentle and understanding and she ha<| some bits of advice that were welcome and helpful. The whole thing was done in one trip. I spent a good part of the morning there and the first thing I knew I was on Social Security, as they say. Everyone was kind, polite and helpful. Nobody should be reluctant to apply for Social Security. I never would again." Write to Carl Rlblet Jr. at Box 40757, Tucson, AZ 85717 for information and advice on problems of aging.
