FS co-op adapts to major farm changes I'.MiK 3 - I'l.AINIIKAIKR - FRIDAY. DECEMBER », IMS McHenry and Walworth County tenners attending the McHenry FS annual meeting laat week heard how their cooperative!* adapting to major changes that are re-shaping farming. Stanley Steagall, who is marking his twenty-fifth year as general manager of the farmer- owned cooperative, said the company more than a year ago anticipated major inroads in sales and earnings would be caused by the Payment-in-Kind program and other factors af- fectmg fanning. Because of advance planning, expenses were trimmed and a more aggressive marketing program was undertaken. A series of frank discussions with farmer customers was con ducted last spring. The company has experienced a busy fall season of servicing farmers with fertilizer. Cropatrol has been instrumental in increasing both volume and the expansion of management services. Cropatrol is an agronomic counsulting service providing , production in formation to farmers who realize it is difficult to specialize in all areas that concern far ming. Richard Walters, Woodstock farmer who is McHenry FS president, said Cropatrol already has 25,000 acres under contract for 1984, and signups are brisk. Walters observed, "We are in a time of change in the farming of business. The margin for error has become very small. Little mistakes have big con sequences." Explaining, the value of Cropatrol - one change to help farmers avoid errors in farming decisions- Walters asserted, "This crop monitoripg and advisory service will help you spend money more wisely," he tokl the 600 farm men and women during his President Report. "Fertilizer is applied where needed. Chemicals are used to control known pests. Fields are walked to guard against in-season problems. Even infra-red photography is utilized in evaluating field situations." Steagall said new products such as bulk chemicals for sale directly to fanners can help reduce per acre costs for far mers. A big step taken by McHenry FS was installing a computer during the past year. "Com puters make the task manageable. Cropatrol records will be kept, grain records will soon go on line. We are enthused with the opportunity to help farmers with programs for their benefit and with opportunities to do a better management job for McHenry FS." Steagall said prices for the season ahead appear stable but warned that the same factors that caused problems the past two years are still present- lability to over-produce and lack of demand for U.S. products." During the election of directors, three incumbents* were reelected: John Tueting, Elkhorn; Richard Walters, Woodstock, and John Martin, Marengo. In special ceremonies con ducted by Lester Guenther, Woodstock, vice-president, six employees were recognized. Three were recognized for their years of service - Leroy Mellendorf, Marengo and Leon Torrens, Harvard, 25 years each; and Ai May, Woodstock, 20 years. Three were saluted at the time of their retirement: Leroy Wagner, McHerny; Russell Gieseke, Marengo, a 25-year veteran, and Don Baerbock, Elkhorn. here & * there in Business • Post office helpers sell stamps The McHenry State Bank and The First National Bank of McHenry, through the cooperation of the McHenry Post Office, will offer to sell Christmas stamps to their customers as an added service.
