Venus, Saturn team up for 'Star of Wonder' sr:< ,IUNM'A(;Kr, -l ' l-AINI)KAI,i:H - FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16, 19X3 Early Saturday morning, Dec. 17, the planets Venus and Saturn will make a dazzling joint ap pearance, reminiscent of the grouping of planets which some astronomers think the Wise Men saw as the Star of Bethlehem. To give people a closer look at this unusual event, the Adler Planetarium and the Chicago Astronomical Society (OCAS) will hold a free public observing session beginning at 4:30 a.m. at the Planetarium. Weather permitting, visitors will be able to view the two planets from the Planetarium's Doane Ob servatory and through variety of CAS members' telescopes. According to Adler Planetarium Astronomer Larry Ciupik, when two planets are in the same longitude they are said to be "in conjunction". On Saturday Venus and Saturn will not only have the same longitude, they will also have almost the same latitude and will, therefore, appear to be extremely close to each other. Not until 1992 will Venus and Saturn again be in such close conjunction, and the 1992 con junction is expected to be dif ficult to view. Moreover, there will be no other easily visible conjunction of bright planets as close as this one for the rest of the decade. Although the time of Satur day's conjunction will be ap proximately 5 a.m., Ciupik says the planets will appear to be very close until sunrise. "Looking toward . the southeast you will see the two planets high in the sky. Venus will be ivory-white and very bright. Saturn will be much less bright - just sort of a pinpoint of gold right below Venus." With the aid of a telescope, or even binoculars, observers will be able to see that Venus is only 70 percent illuminated. "Like our moon, Venus goes through a cycle of phara," Ciupik ex plains, "but you elm only see the difference if you use a telescope or binoculars." Saturday morning's telescope view of Saturn will show the planet's rings in a slightly tilted position. Observers will also be able to spot the blue-white star Spica and the reddish planet Mars to the upper right of the paired planets. Even though Venus and Saturn will appear to be very close to one another, Ciupik explains that this is only an illusion. "Actually, the two planets are nearly 900 million miles apart. Venus will be about 100 millin miles from earth and Saturn will be about one billion miles away from use. On Saturday morning Venus and Saturn will appear to be close together because, as viewed from the earth, they are both in the same part of their orbital path around the sun. In addition to the observing session the Planetarium will present the Sky Show, "Star of Wonder" at 5:30 a.m., 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., so visitors can compare the "star" seen by the Wise Men with what they see in the real sky that morning. The Sky Show explores the possibility that what the Wise men saw as the Star of Bethlehem may not have been a star at all, but perhaps a con junction of planets or a con junction of a planet and a Mar. But there is an important difference between the Saturday conjunction and the events astronomers consider the two major Star of Bethlehem can didates. Both of the earlier events were the first of three cojunctions of the same bodies within a one-year period - what astronomers call a triple con junction. Such events are much more unusual than a single con junction. A triple conjunction of Mars and Jupiter occurred in 1979-80 but one must go back to 1830-37 for the next moot recent triple conjunction of those two planets. There is an admission charge to the Sky Show. Children under the age of six are not admitted to the Sky Show but are welcome to attend the observing session. For those who do not wish to get up early the Planetarium's Sky Show, "Star of Wonder" will be presented at 11 in the mor ning and at 1, 2, 3, and 4 in the afternoon Saturday and Sunday. From Dec. 19 through Dec. 23 there will be shows at 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m. with an 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23. From Dec. 24 through Jan. 2, show times are 11 a.m. 1, 2, 3, 4 p.m. with an 8 p.m. show Friday, Dec.- 30. The Planetarium will be closed Christmas Day.
