V RTA announces fare cuts for commuters SKI . .OK 2 - PAGE 13 - PLAIN DEALER - FRIDAY. DECEMBER It. 1983 by Cliff Ward Shaw--Free Press News Service McHenry County train commuters can realize what ; amounts to a month's free ride on the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) if they pur chase monthly passes for a year mi the transit system, according to detailed figures of the proposed RTA budget for 1984. The new RTA board's call for an across-the-board 10 percent fare cut for suburban rail commuters, tentatively scheduled to go into effect Feb. ' 1,1984, would reduce a monthly pass from Woodstock to Chicago from $153.90 to $137.70, an an nual savings of $194.40. Riders getting on and off at Crystal Lake could save $162 annually if monthly fares from that station are reduced from $132.30 to $118.80, as proposed by the in terim RTA board. The fare from Harvard, the highest monthly rail charge in the RTA system, would be reduced from $175.50 to $156.50, an annual savings of $228. The budget also features one way and weekly fare reductions. In Woodstock, a one-way ticket to Chicago would cost $5.10, reduced 60 cents from current levels, and the weekly pass would be cut from $45.60 to $40.80. In Crystal Lake, the one-way fare would be cut from $4.90 to $4.40, and the weekly fare would be reduced from $39.20 to $35.20. In Harvard, fares would be reduced from $6.50 to $5.80 and from $52 to $46.40 for one-way and weekly rates, respectively. In addition to fare reductions, McHenry County riders can expect extended service, if the $878.2 million balanced budget is not significantly altered. According to RTA interim chairman John Kramer, "This draft program and budget provides a solid blueprint for financial stability of transit in the six county area." , Hie new budget also calls for extension of hourly service weekdays after 6:30 p.m. on the Chicago and North Western (CNW) line which serves McHenry County and is the line which faced severe service cuts during the RTA financial crunch of 1981. Also, late-night weekend trains and additional midday service on the CNW's northwest line are also under con sideration. According to the report, "a free bus from Crystal Lake to Harvard will be a cost effective alterative for certain midday trains now terminating at Crystal Lake rather than Harvard or Woodstock." The cost of these and other extended services is expected to be $6,78 million over the next five fiscal years. However, elimination of some services along other parts of other lines and the closing of 17 little-used stations, including the one at Hartland, are expected to save the RTA almost $6.48 million over the same period. The budget also outlines the first coordinated suburban bus-cdlhmuter rail-CTA fare "link-up" plan. According to the plan, the monthly commuter rail rider may buy $25 passes which - will entitle the rider to ride the feeder bus from his home to the train station and the CTA shuttle bus from the Chicago station to his workplace. This move is expected to save the rider an additional $180 a year, and any added cost to the RTA will be made up through increased usage by commuters, according to the budget. Details of the budget package became known last week, and were announced by interim chairman Kramer. The nine- member interim RTA board was named after the RTA ad ministration was restructured as part of the state subsidy package signed by Gov. James Thompson. A public hearing on the entire proposed RTA budget for 1984 will be held Wednesday, Dec. 21, at the McHenry County Cour thouse from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and from 7:30 p.m. to con clusion. It is one of 10 such hearings the RTA is holding in Chicago and suburban counties Dec. 20-21. general m yoi iwi cii News Record deer-hunting season By Cliff Ward Shaw Free Press News Service McHenry County deer hunters brought in what appears to be a record number of kills as the 1983 shotgun deer hunting season ended Sunday. According to Officer Howard Brewer of the state conservation department's division of law enforcement in Spring Grove, county hunters killed 54 deer this weekend, bringing the total for the two-weekend, six-day season to 134 deer. County hunters bagged 80 deer the first weekend of the season in November. In 1982, 113 deer were taken in the county. Brewer attributed the suc cessful season to several fac tors, saying the deer population in the county was greater this year. ' * "Maybe more people were abiding by the law and registering their kills this year," Brewer added. All county hunters were required to register kills with game officials at Moraine Hills State Park. Friday's snow also was a factor, since fresh snow allows easier tracking by hunters. "The first day (Friday) was an excellent day for deer hun ting," Brewer said, adding that it made up for Sunday's poor, rainy weather. Statewide figures on this year's hunt were unavailable Monday morning. Illinois Department of Conservation officials had predicted that thin year's total may surpass last year's record total of 22,657 kills.
