Clara Adams, owner and operator of Adams Market, 3604 N. Chapel Hill Road, has retired after 47 years in during the height of the Great Depression and has survived economic highs and lows since then. "Those were tough times," die said. "I remember the farmers would bring eggs to trade for merchandise." Adams Market was the first building on, what was then, a newly-cut Chapel Hill Road. Since that time, the area has grown considerably. There are many year-round residences and business in the immediate area. "There were only summer homes at first and it was the summer trading that got us through the winter," Mrs. Adams said. A lifelong resident of the Johnsburg area, Mrs. Adams attended St. John's Catholic School and then went to work in myself. This is going to be a whole new experience," Mrs. Adams said. The closing will prove to be a new experience for many Johnsburg residents, three generations of whom have passed through those doors. "We've had whole families come in here. Parents traded here, their children have gotten married and now their children are in college," she said. Noting the 20-percent off sale prices, she explained to one young customer, "I'm trying to sell down as much as I can before I retire. It's great, don't you think?" "For you, maybe," came the reply. "I'll be glad to get out, but I am going to miss it," she said. "I really have enjoyed it. The i$r§ have been mar- m *{,<**. «*> # # <»«• unwind! Iff? many people are in a money rut and look at the world through eyes tainted with dollar signs, not so Mrs. Adams. She says the neighborhood business was "always interesting and different every day." "It seems the bigger the business, the more impersonal it is," Mrs. Adams commented. What lies ahead? The building is being rented, with an option to buy, as office space. Mrs. Adams says she wants to do some traveling and do a lot of the things she missed out on. Mrs. Rathbone has been employed at NIMC for a little over three years, and has found the job growing more interesting every year. "It's a joy to come to work. My co-workers are wonderful, and the people we meet each day always have something to offer. I really like meeting the older patients, because they are so appreciative of the attention they receive. They have little bits of wisdom to offer, and are always easy to talk to." She and her husband, Dion, have lived in McHenry for 12 years and have three children: Tracey, 16, Cathy, 15 and Dion, 9. Since her husband is an avid golfer, Nancy has become a enthusiastic novice, and they both enjoy bowling. Family time is another important interest, and her day shift hours in medical imaging help her to maintain an interesting job and fulfill home obligations as well. "I was a little shy about telling my family, about the award," she said, "because I couldn't believe I would ever get something like that. They were all proud of me though, and I was absolutely thrilled." So were Nancy's co-workers, who gave her a round of ap plause when the presentation was made. The award includes a paid day-off, engraved pen and pencil set, dinner for two at an area restaurant, and a cer tificate recognizing Nancy as employee of the month. Employees are nominated for the award by fellow staff members or administrative personnel from other than their own department. The employees so honored are consider to have given outstanding service to the hospital; worked to improve both personally and professionally; upheld the standards of the hospital; and dedicated themselves to fulfilling hospital goals and objectives. 41 * 'HMIMKE root ins CYLINDERS AT AIM-TECH- LIMITED AIR TECH IS THIS AREA'S EXCLUSIVE GAS DISTRIBUTOR TOR M0 "' Rockford Industrial Welding Supply, Inc.
