. \ Penza hoping success transfers 9y Brian Spears Shaw-Free Press Service WOODSTOCK -- Coach Don Penza is hoping that the success of Marian Central Catholic's football team will carry over to Ids girls basketball team. The Hurricanes open their Mason tonight against Grayslake. Marian Central had a winning season last winter at 16-10 overall while going 12-4 for third plaee in the West Suburban Catholic conference. •'4V- , Marian is led by returning starters Nancy Walsh and Beth Penta. Walsh, a 5-5 guard, dropped in 11 points a game for the 'Canes last year, while Peon, a M guard or forward, added 10 points a game. 54 forward-center Kim Kuper and 0-2 center Beth Lango also saw action as juniors last "I've got six starters this year. Depending on the height of our opposition and who is on or off, I expect all six to be playing," Penza said. Tbt other two starters are seniors Trisha Griffin, a 5*10 center, and Chris Ferrero, a 5-6 guard. Also on this year's squad are Juniors Michelle Lalor, Lora Lalor, Donna Remke, and senior Marian Asfeld. "We've got some good shooting, particularly from Nancy (Walsh) and Beth (Penza) and Beth Lango from the free throw line," Penza Penza said he plans to use what he calls a 'freelance of fense' "I don't play patterns, I Just want to work the ball around to create a situation," he said. .. - Defense will be the key, ac cording to Penza, who plans to run a zone defense and a press when the occasion calls for it. "Tm hoping well have a strong defensive ball club," Penza said. "The offense may not be- able to generate much more than 45 points. If we can stay above that fematk^liliiag the big thing is holding the other team under 45.1 think we can do that -- we work hard on Another strong spot for Marian is rebounding. The team is skilled on both the offensive and defensive boards. Marian has been to the sec tional before, but Penza says his team has the potential to make the 'Sweet Sixteen*. "My primary goal is to play good no matter what we do and to win a conference cham pionship. Anything you do after that is idng on the cake," Penza said. The Hurricanes are in the Northwest Suburban Conference this year, and facing unfamiliar competition, so Penza said he really doesn't know who the teams to beat will be. Rob and Brad did a real nice job boxing him out," Blue Streak Coach Gordie Tebo said. "Brad really is starting to play smart. He gets himself so keyed up for the games that sometimes he gets overagressive and commits dumb fouls. I think he's learning how to play smart defense." Peterson didn't score a point in the first two quarters and he sat down with his third foul with 1:50 remaining in the half. He did come out of the shell somewhat in the second half, however, getting his first bucket at the 4:20 mark of the third stanza and finished the game with eight points. "The difference in the game tonight was the pressure Woodstock put on our wings. If we can learn to handle that pressure we'll be alright," UWP aaid. "We. wanted to tdfcr'advantage ef-rfafc"{Peter son's) height but we couldn't get tike baU inside . " Dave Toussaint was a one- man crew in the first period as he scored seven of the Warriors' first eight points to get his team to a Hi lead. Corey Scott added two hoops later in the quarter as McHenry bolted to a 19-8 lead with 2:10 left. The Warriors' 2-2-1, full-court press gave the Blue Streaks problems in the first quarter causing several turnovers that were turned into easy baskets as continued from page 20 eight points came off the press. But, Jeff Harris nailed two 15- footers in the final minute to bring the Streaks to within 13-12, and the comeback had begun. Mecklenburg, a 6-2 junior, provided a spark off the bench as his aggressive defense on one end forced a five seconds call, and he tossed in three straight shots to key the WHS surge. "He did one heckuva job," Tebo said of his reserve swingman. "When Greg (Bradshaw) has to go out of the game, Rob comes in and gives us a good scoring threat." Witty also had a hand in the turn of events as he stole a pass and fed Harris on a fastbreak layup to give WHS a 23-15 advantage. Harris scored 16 of his game total 18 points in the first half. He tallied 10 points in the second quarter on a trio of 15-footers and four free throws while playing weU defensively. q/Pwe Hutter free throws with 1:59 left in the second quarter gave WHS a 29-16 lead and Harris'baseline jumper with :06 on the clock gave the Streaks the 35-20 halftime lead. McHenry made a mild run in the third quarter as it got the lead down to 10 at 41-31 on Tim Schmitt's short jumper at the 3:20 mark. However, Hutter countered with a hook shot from the lane and banged home a 10- footer to re-establish command. WHS led, 47-35 entering the final eight minutes. Witty tallied five quick points for WHS on a pair of drives (once he got fouled and con verted) through the lane. The teams traded hoops until a spurt starting with a three-point play and two free throws by Hutter, and two more gratis tosses by Witty gave WHS a 20-point command at 61-41. WHS went scoreless the final 4:£> of the game while McHenry managed 10 points. "We didn't get the fast break like we thought we could," Ludwig said. "We scouted Woodstock and found that they can be suceptible to the break. We gotour share of rebounds but we didn't get the outlet pass." McHenry, which drops to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the FVC, was led by Scott who tallied 12. After his first-quarter surge, Toussaint was quiet and finished with eight as did Peterson.
