Elam, 20, of 523 Eagle St., Crystal Lake, remains in McHenry County Jail on a murder charge after a judge Wednesday denied a reduction of his $500,000 bond. Elam is held in connection with the Sept. 2 death of his 18- month-old stepson, Jesse. The defendant appeared Wednesday before Judge Henry Cowlin in 19th Judicial Circuit Court where the defense motion for a reduction of bond was denied. Crystal Lake police arrested Elam after an investigation into the alleged child-abuse case. Elam reportedly called police to his home Sept. 1 and ex plained that his stepson needed emergency medical attention, according to Police Chief Sam Johns. Crystal Lake paramedics responded and took the child to McHenry Hospital. He was later transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit of Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, where he died the next day of suspected internal injuries. Elam\is scheduled for trial before Cowlin on Feb. 14.
