SECTION * -PAGElO -PLilI INDEALER • WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1983 general News City schedules classes in '84 BALLET n Boys and girls with 2 to 3 years' previous ballet training will eî joy this Ballet n class. It will emphasize the elementary foundations of ballet technique coordinating step combinations with total body movements. This 20-week class that begins on Saturday, Jan. 7, will be held at Parkland Junior High School from 9:90 to 10:30 a.m. FRE-BALLET Pre-Ballet-Creative Rhythmic Movement is a great class to begin dance training. Sleds are being sharpened and serviced in anticipation. Sledding is a lot of fun, but it ^yc&n also be hazardous. To Tuedsay, 1-2, McHenry Public prevent accidents, you must Library; Jan. 7, Saturdays, 8:30- 9:30, Parkland School. Both Classes have limited space so sign up soon. Keep in' Healthy: Prevent accidents while sledding For Gifts or Guests Stitch regular-sized rickrack along the lower edge of a white apron's waistband. Cut 5 strips of the same type of rickrack into varying lengths to be stitched to the apron, at the end of which will hang your Christmas ornaments. Cut 5 ornament shapes from fabric remnants. Edge ornaments with gold metallic baby rickrack. Stitch rickrack designs on the or naments, adding sequins. Sew each ornament to the end of each rickrack strip on the apron. These make beautiful gifts, or why not have a fancy apron to wear for your family or holiday guests! reduce the risks. And the best way to reduce risk is to use equipment that is in first-rate condition and use it properly. If I were shopping for a sled, I'd look for one that has secure handholds and is easy to steer. I'd make sure that there are no protruding rivets or sharp edges. And I'd look for a sled that has a bumper guard over the metal front bar. I would want a sled that has runners that curve around to the top and connect with the side rails. Every child, yours and mine, should be told that there is certain behavior that's ap propriate to every sport; so teach them not to roughhouse or push or shove. Before sending my children out to play, I would teach them to look over the area on which they'll be sledding. I would tell them to make sure there are no debris or bumps on the hill before starting the first trip down. If my child has not used a sled before, I would start him off on a short, gradual slope so he wouldn't build up too much speed before he reached the bottom. He or she should be taught not to slide down the slope when someone else nearby is sledding down. And tell them that when they reach the bottom of the slope, they should move out^of the way quickly. For the sake of both safety and/CoHrtgsy, your child should walk back up the slope along a side path that is out of the way of sleds coming down. - * Now It know, when children are happy and excited, they don't slow down to think before bellyflopping on % sled and sliding down a hill. But the point is, there are habits that should be drilled into your child when 4^e first begins to learn how to use a sled. For example, if they see a collision is going to occur, they can get off a moving sled safely by rolling sideways off the sled. Sledding on city streets is a dangerous practice even when traffic is light. There are two important safety rules that your child should never be allowed to hrp*k. i Don't slijde through intersections or across streets. Cars can seemingly appear out of nowhere. 2. Never tie the sled to, or grab hold of the back of, a moving car. When the car stops, the sled doesn't. If it slides under the car, there can be serious injuries, especially to the head and neck. Before the sled is put into use, and frequently throughout the winter season, check me sled or toboggan for split or splintered wood. Sand all rough spots smooth. Make sure no metal parts are bent out of shape, and the'ropes have not frayed. When sledding, always hold the ropes on top of the sled. Of course, you shouldn't leave a sled outdoors where it can absorb moisture or rust, but if you do have a problem with rust, rub the sled runners and other metal parts with candle ylax or paraffin to keep them rust free. This will also make the runners coast easily. There is nothing quite as exhilarating as whizzing down a steep hill. Just make sure your child knows the safety rules so he'll be able to climb back up.
