News Medical center to sponsor blood drawing December 23 Make Bald Eagle rewards bald eagles are once again imoying back into northern Illifiois, southern Wisconsin and eastern Iowa. As many as 187 per day have been observed flying south past Eagle Valley Nature Preserve. Many of these eagles are moving into new areas looking for food and shelter. Many of them have already been seen feeding on dead pigs ' and manure throughout western Grant County in Wisconsin while others are feeding in the open water along the Mississippi River below power plants and dams. i v According to Terrence Ingram, executive director for Eagle Valley En vironmentalists, Inc., "Every year, some of these wintering eagles are shot by careless hunters who are not aware that bald eagles are even in the area while some do know what they are shotting at atod shoot anyway." As a deterrent to these wanton killings, EVE is offereing a $250 reward to anyone*who give police information resulting in a conviction of anyone who does shoot or kill an eagle. "The fine for killing one eagle could be $10,000, but that doesn't seem to prevent eagles from being shot. If everyone helps to protect these magnificent birds while thay are in our area, perhaps next spring more of them will be able to move north to their nesting grounds," Ingram said. Anyone witnessing an eagle killing or having information about one should contact their local police or game warden. While the need for blood is always urgent, the holidays often bring an in creased demand, making it vital that many types of blood are available. Northern Illinois Medical Center is one of 22 member hospitals in the Aurora Blood Bank, and sponsors bloocf drawings twice a year. A single blood donation provides a unit of whole blood, which can be used to transfuse a patient, or may be processed into several blood products, such as plasma, red blood cells, or white blood cell concentrate. Donors should be between the ages of 17 and 65, and weigh at least 110 pounds. Most people are suitable candidates as blood donors unless they are anemic, pregnant, or have high blood pressure. To protect the donor and the future patient from any adverse effect, a brief physical examination and a test for hemoglobin will be conducted the day of the blood drive. Conditions liable to be af fected by blood donation are heart disease, epilepsy, in fectious disease, diabetes, or acute allergy. It is also necessary that the donor's temperature, blood pressure, and pulse are normal. Advances in surgery, medicine, drug treatment and immunology have resulted in safer and more effective blood and blood products available for health protection of the public. Blood banking has grown and developed through the generosity of volunteer donors. The Aurora Blood Bank stores blood from drawings in an eight- county area. Any resident of McHenry County is entitled to free blood However, blood is availaWe^ anywhere in the United States to a family member of a donor to the Aurora Blood Bank. The blood bank tries to draw 175 to 200 units of blood dally to maintain its member hospitals, and also provides a 24-hour-a- day service to those members. Each hospital maintains a supply of blood, but due to the 21- day shelf life of units, a hospital blood supply -must be replenished regularly. Northern Illinois Medical Center's blood drawing wilftake place from noon to 4 p.», in the Carey House Board Room, and is open to the employees and public. The Carey House is a red brick house, situated on Waukegan Road, past the main entrance to the hospital. Donors are advised to park toward the back of the hospital parking lot, and the Carey House is a short walk across the street. For further information, or to make an appointment, call the hospital public realtions department at 815-385-2200, extension 711. Evergreen Cards 1. Fold a stiff piecc of paper into fourths. 2.
