Brickyard, Ford City, Fox Valley Center, Gary Village, Golf Mill, Joliet Mall, Lakehurst, Lincoln Mall, Marquette Mall, North Riverside Park, Orland Square, Southlake Mall, Spring Hill Mall, Winston Plaza, Woodfield, Yorktown The Johnsburg District Library announces a new library service program for people who want to be library users but are physically unable to come to the library. The new service is called the Homebound Outreach Program and its purpose is to bring the enjoyment of books to those persons who for one reason or another are unable to go to the library themselves to select books. Many persons enjoy reading but because of illness, injury, handicap or age are unable to do so or can go only with great difficulty. With this service a library staff person will take a selection of books to the homebound patron every two weeks and the patron will pick out the ones he wants to keep for the two weeks. The books which the patron picks from will be those the library has selected based on a profile of the patron's interests or works which he has specifically requested. Since the library has over 6,000 books in its collection and can borrow almost any other book that is wanted through the Northern Illinois Library System, the library will be able to supply practically any requested book. This outreach service will begin the second week of January. There will be no charge for this service, and the Johnsburg District Library invites all homebound residents of the Johnsburg School District to partake of the service. This service is available to any homebound person of any age living in the Johnsburg School District. If you are homebound or know of someone who is homebound, call the Johnsburg Library for more information or to register for the service. The library phone number is 344-0077 and the hours are Monday, Wednesday, anctThursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Tuesday and Friday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. WRONG BOY The young student pictured participating in Edgebrok School's enrichment program which appeared in the Dec. 16 issue, was Don Merkel, not Ben Merkle as stated in the mnHon Proper care after bring a Christmas tree home is essential to prolong the indoor life of the tree and for safety reasons. No matter how fresh the tree was when purchased, it can quickly dry out and become a fire hazard if improperly care for. By following a few simple suggestions, people can get maximum use of their trees and assure the safety of all oc cupants of the home. It is very important to make a fresh cut on the bottom of the trunk and place the tree in water as soon as possible after bringing The : (EXTENSION) Pe< on these t « W * '• 8 V 1 . %>•.*" fe fmmed daywear coordinates. Save on petite and larger sizes, tool the tree home, according to Bruce Spangenberg, hor ticulture adviser with the McHenry County Cooperative Extension Service. Research has shown that either a diagonal or right-angle (straight) cut will allow equal water uptake by the tree. A flat, right angle cut will support the tree better and allow uptake even when the water level becomes low. After making the cut, place the tree in a bucket of water or similar container, and store in cool, sheltered place. Garages, sheds, and similar locations are ideal, as they offer cool tem peratures and shelter from damaging drying winds, snow and ice. Check the water daily and refill as needed. Avoid laying trees on the ground, because they may freeze to the soil surface or become buried in snow. When it's time to bring the tree indoors, mount it firmly in the stand. Tree stands that are solidly constructed and have adequate water •/ storage ity are best. CaveMte a location redueS Water loss, Spangenberg added. Avoid locations near fireplaces, heat ducts, radiators, space heaters. and TV sets; all have drying effect on trees. If possible, place the tree in a room that is slightly cooler than the rest of the house. Check the water twice a day, ftfrnarinlly right after bringing the tree inside. Trees can take up as much as two quarts during the first day inside, which gradually tapers off to an average of a quart a day by the end of the first week, com mented Spangenberg. Chemical additive to the water have not been proven to help needles stay on trees longer. Check all light systems over very carefully before placing on the tree. Replace sets with frayed wires or broken sockets. When decorating trees with lights, avoid having bulbs in direct contact with needles, especially large bulbs, which generate quite a bit of heat. Do not use candles on or near Christmas trees. Also, don't leave lighted trees unattended. The longer the tree is indoors, the more combustible it becomes. Most trees put up shortly before Christmas will make it through New Year's, but don't take it for granted. If the needles become brittle and large numbers fall off, consider removing the tree as soon as possible.
