Fox river freezes second time in fall, 1933 SECTION 2 PAGE 15- PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 21 . 1M3 50 YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 14, 1933) Fox River was frozen again this week for the second time this year when temperatures slipped to zero under the in fluence of a bitter northwest wind. The cold spell was not long-lived, however, and relief came when cloudy skies brought a promise of snow. The cold weather came out of the Canadian northwest and carried subzero temperatures to Min nesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin. TWICE TOLD TALES Edited from our files of years gone by Santa Claus has arrived in this vicinity and was present at the Christmas party given by Riverview Camp at K.C. hall. Members of the camp, with their children and juveniles, were present. Santa presented the children with a treat and everyone present received a gift. Games were played and a very merry evening was spent. Joyce Kilmer Court donated $25 and the local Red Cross, $25 to the township poor fund. Supervisor S.H. Freund gave $50 and McHenry Factory fund, $50, making a total of $150 to date. 40 YEARS AGO • (Taken from the files of Dec. 23, 1943) The Plaindealer sent Christmas greetings to all service people wherever they may be. On the front page of the paper were pictures of those in service and where they were stationed, Steve Harvey, Australia; Glenn Draper, Aleutian Islands; Carmel Wiser Maynard, South Sea Islands; Elmer Freund, Hawaiian Islands; George Kinsala, Italy; and Arnold Larson, India. Several children wrote letters to Santa Claus expressing their wants for Christmas. Dorothy Stoffel wanted a doll, and a doll bed, Joan May asked for a big doll, a shovel like Joan Collins, tinker toys and a three-wheel scooter. Kevin Carey would like a pair of skates and some nice bright red socks, a woodentruck and a telescope. Junior Unti said he was 8 years old and wanted an army set and carpenter set, and a wagon, too. 25 YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 23, 1958) The home of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Schmunk at 106 E. Second street, McHenry, in the north part of the city, was partially destroyed by flames. Firemen answered the call immediately after an alarm was turned in and saved the structure from total loss. Mr. and Mrs.- Sch munk were at work at Crystal Lake, four of their children were in school and a fifth was visiting relatives when the fire broke out. It is gratifying to see how many homes are beautifully decorated tat keeping with the spirit of the season, even though no contest was held to recognize the efforts. Army Pvt. Charles J. Gross, whose wife, Peggy, lives on Route I, Spring Grove, recently completed eight weeks of basic combat training at Fort Hood, Tex. / 10 YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 21, 1973) Santa Claus will receive many petitions this • year, but none more urgent than the one presented to him by a family of seven. They need housing. The prospect of being evicted has been a grim reality since early last fall when the home they are renting was condemned by the McHenry County Health department. A court order will send the family into the street the day after Christmas. general m News v ^ o NIMC plans to purchase body scanner The Northern Illinois Medical Center, McHenry, proposes to purchase a TCT Whole Body Scanner for the diagnostic radiology department of the facility currently being con structed as a replacement to McHenry Hospital, at an estimated cost of $1,089,316.
