Thomas Johnson reminds new «ar shoppers that vehicles or dered now for delivery after Jan. ^1 will be subject to the increased sale tax rate. "This means that even if you ordered a car last month, you'll have to pay the higher rate if it won't be delivered to you until after January 1 when the in creased tax rate goes into ef fect." Johnson said. The revenue director ex plained that since tax returns are not filed on the purchase of a vehicle until after the vehicle is delivered and registered in Illinois, the rate in effect at that time will apply. The tax changes voted last summer by the state legislature include a one-persept increase in the state's sales taWate as well as the elimination of the state sales tax on food and drugs. In addition, the state sales tax on gasohol will change to one percent on Jan. 1. In most of Illinois, Johnson said, this will mean a combined state and local tax of six percent on most purchases. athletes run in the Pinkstaff fafmily. Now comes Jim, Jr. with a bowling score that is a dream. It was at McHenry Rec where Jim bowled a 731 series with games of 238-259-234. Wow! --- And Congratulations. Never was a group picture where all members were present. Cut it down to two people, like a bride and groom, and both are usually there. Chicago Tribune sports writer Bob Logan, who resides in our city, came a-callin' with his friendly wife and presented me with a copy of his new book, The Miracle of 35th Street. Somebody must have given Bob the ideathat I am a White Sox fan. Whenever I have a chance, my nose is buried in the book. The deeper I get into it, the more interesting it gets. Bob has had a world of ex perience in covering various big time sports. Not only is his book worth reading, a visit with him is also stimulating to a sports fan. When we visited Bimbo's recently, Eddie pointed to the Miracle on 35th St. posted prominently behind the bar. Now comes a problem for Eddie. Cub fans want equal time. Why don't they get somebody to write a book? We hadn't seen John Rabor in a long time. We recognized his gentle voice, but couldn't get him into a conversation. He is bashful about getting his name in this column. This is another of those holiday, 3-columns-a-week times. Our dear editor says we have to get this third one in by Friday morning. Think of it! Christmas hasn't arrived. What's more--next week will be the same. When Monday follows a Sunday holiday, they say it is a legal holiday. It might take an extra day to recover. Now we are getting some place. Larry Nimsgern has a lady barber working in his shop. Sue is her name and she has some real qualifications. Start with good looks and a million dollar smile. We lost a long-time, next door neighbor this week, Ford Hanford. With his mechanical skill and fine tools, Ford was a handy man to have around. In spite of me being a White Sox fan, like a good neighbor, he put up with me. If they don't have baseball l » games on TV up in heave?, Ford is going'to be lost. ' • - If you have been dreaming of a white Christmas, your dream has come true. Must say the white stuff is pretty on the ground. It causes some driving problems, but caution is in order. PICKUPS. Flattery is what makes husbands out of bachelors. All it took was summertime to get all the detour signs upon the roads. Good music is the kind that was popular when you were young. Terrible music is the kind th^Jdds like now. A polished person is one who does not cast reflections on others. After reading about Bob Logan's book about the White Sox at 35th and Shields, George R. Miller phoned to give me: some history. Both George and his father were born at 35th and Shields. The father, Charlie, once played ball with "The Old Roman" Comiskey. * More. Charlie Miller planted cabbage where Comiskey Park now stands. It was farm land. And more. Lucy (Hughes) Blum, who grew up near the McHenry dam, spent sonr^ time with the Ed Comiskeys in Chicago and told of playing with the sheep and lambs pastured in the park to keep the grass down. With all the history coming forth, you may have to write another book, Bob. Jim Curran called to discuss that book and wondered how word got around that I am a White Sox fan. Those things do leak out. Told Jim I have been a Sox fan since I reached the age of reason. Actually, it came about when Eld Comiskey, whose wife was Lucy Hughes' aunt, visited these parts in the summertime. Ed used to tour the coun tryside with horse and buggy and took me with him. Naturally, I heard nothing but White Sox. How great it was! \ yzete" phoned Arizona to wish us a Merry Christmas and to let us know fhe tem- " perature out there in early morning was 70 degrees in the shade. > --And, I don't think that was a wind chill figure. * Federal grant for Volo bog ROOT CANALS - >70 E A C H C A N A L RELINES -$65 REPAIRS • *15 3-4 HOUR SKItVICE A N D U P 1 - 2 H R . Federal grants totaling $38,668 have been awarded by the In stitute of Museum Services to three Illinois Department of Conservation sites. « New Salem State Park, near Petersburg in Menard County, was selected for a $16,000 Special Project Support grant to develop a New Salem Guide and workbook. Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site, south of Charleston in Coles County, and Volo Bog State Natural Area, were approved for General Operating Support grants of $13,983 and $8,685, respectively. IMS annually distributes its funds to applicants on a com petitive basis. Only 335 of 1,126 institutions appling for aid this year were successful, and New Salem was one of only 17 sites nationwide to receive Special Project support. General Operating Support grants will allow the Lincoln Log Cabin and Volo Bog sites to maintain effective levels of programming and operations while local funding sources are beine sought. The Conservation Department applied for the New Salem and Lincoln Log Cabin grants. Volo Bog's award, however, was requested by The Friends of Volo Bog, an organization of citizens interested in the natural area. 0 *0 £ i •I H -•ft* H To An Outstanding Group!
