While Illinois still does not have a law requiring deposits on beverage containers^ some of the benefits of this legislation t are available through voluntary recycling. According to the Con­ servationist, December, 1983, "It is estimated that manufacturing bottles and cans from recycled materials creates 45 to 70 percent less in water pollution than making them from* virgin materials. This is illustrated by the Glass Con­ tainer Corporation of Con­ necticut which discovered that by increasing the percentage of recycled glass used in making bottles, it was able to meet federal air quality standards without installing costly pollution control devices. The same is true for cans, where recycling aluminum creates far less pollution than producing new aluminum." Also benefitting from public participation in this drive will be the McHenry Area Jaycees. According to Rick Bronars, who is heading up the drive for the Jaycees/they hope to raise enough money to send a local youngster to Camp New Hope for a week. The camp, which is located in Mattoon, seeks to give the camping experience to handicapped . or disabled children. As usual, any of the following items brought to the drive will aid these organizations: newspaper (no magazines or junk mail included), cardboard and brown paper bags tied into manageable bundles, "tin" cans which have been washed and flattened, glass containers with all plastic and metal removed, used motor oil, and scrap aluminum. ~ Clean and crushed, 100 per­ cent aluminum cans will be bought for 33 cents per pound; if uncrushed, you will receive 31 cents per pound. Also, on the second Wed­ nesday of each month (Jan. 11 from 9 a.m. to noon), one may bring glass containers and aluminum cans to the rear parking lot of McHenry FS (4004 West Elm) - enter the area via Borden Street. At this time, the Defenders will pay 1 cent a pound for glass and 33 cents per pound for crushed 100 percent aluminum cans.
