The Warriors are still two games out of first, behind Wood stock. "I spent my timeouts asking what was going on," said Ludwig. While his Warrior defense held Jacobs to 34 percent fieldgoal shooting, his squad just managed to shoot 38 per cent. "I told the kids, when they can play that badly and yet win, you have something going for you." As far as Ludwig was concerned, a win is a win, and this one was an im portant one. "We have second place sewed up. We go for first next. We'll take a game at a time." Slimko, watching his team drop out of second place, wasn't so happy. "Of fensively, our players didn't do too good. They did a good job on defense. You're not going to win any games whenever you score just 29 points." McHenry jumped out with the first lead of the game arid never fell behind. In fact, the Warriors played like scoring champions in the first quarter, grabbing a 15-6 first quarter lead. After that, it took plays like a stuff by Jacobs Mark Slimko to wake up the fans in at tendance. The third quarter, however, was the classic. McHenry outscored Jacobs 4-2 in that quarter. "We didn't run an offense all game. How many easy shots did we miss?" asked Ludwig. "The kids were fired up before the game. They went up 15-6, but then on in, died." In a game where offense wasn't pretty, Ludwig had praise for the defense. He was especially happy the way Pat Dunne defended the Golden Eagles' Mark Slimko. The coaches son has been a scoring threat for opponents to deal with^and leads Jacobs in the scoring department. Slimko finished with 16 points, high for both teams. "Pat Dunne did a super job dogging him. He (Slimko) scored 16 points, but he worked for every one of them." Dunne was also McHenry's top scorer with nine points, followed by Scott Freund's eight. Jacobs was playing without its starting center, 6-foot-6 Andy Harris, Slimko wasn't sure how much of an Continued on page 14 Free throw leaves Johnsburg foiled again By Barb Ansell JOHNSBURG The curse of Lake Zurich continued on Johnsburg, as the Boars stretched their sweep of the Skyhawks to three straight games This time the Bears snapped a 45-45 tie with one second left on the clock on a free throw from forward Dean Murin for a 46-45 victory. The Bears took the 'Hawks twice last year, both in the final minutes of thp game ITie loss leaves Johnsburg with a 2-4 record in the Nor thwest Suburban Conference, while Lake Zurich is 5-1. Lake Zurich's coach John Nesheim expected a tough battle from the Skyhawks. "This year's game was the same type of game that we had against the 'Hawks last year. Johnsburg always play tough at home. They are well-coached and the players play hard." The Skyhawks and the Bears kept the game extremely tight in the first quarter. The Skyhawks were able to out-rebound the Bears, but the Bears came out ahead in shooting percentages i jjji the floor By the end of the first quarter Johnsburg had a twtt-point lead, 14-12, thanks to target free throw shooting by Jeff Preston. The Skyhawks continued to add fuel to their fire by establishing a sizeable lead. Johnsburg sunty-44 percent from the floor, with Preston taking command of the boards with three baskets and four rebounds. Johnsburg took a 26- 19 halftime advantage. The Bears, however, did not give up. Instead, they made some rather effective changes on the court and turned the game around. "We decided to change our defense," said Nesheim. "By extending our defense, we were able to take Johnsburg out of its offense and this helped us to Sobczak's deal leads to pins and wins With the end of the seasoni approaching quickly, Marty Sobczak is looking to get the most out of his McHenry wrestling squad. So, he added an incentive, and so far it has worked. Sobczak made a deal with his Warriors squad. For every pin and team win over the weekend, Sobzcak said he would subtract a lap from his usual 20 laps a practice his squad runs. Well, after three matches this past weekend, practices are going to be a lot easier for the Warriors this week. Sobczak's squad won all three matches and collected 14 pins. Besides the laps, Dan Mohnen and Roland Hunt have in centives of their own. Both are chasing a McHenry career pin record of 16. Mohnen had two pins over the weekend and raised his team leading total to 14. Hunt recorded two and has 11 * for the season. McHenry started the weekend with a 47-17 win over Jacobs Friday to raise its record in the Fox Valley Conference to 2-2. A win over Crystal Lake Central next Friday will give the Warriors a winning FVC record on the season. Saturday, the Warriors swept another double dual, defeating Streamwood 37-27 and Lake Zurich 48-10. The three wins raised McHenry's overall record over the .500 level to 10-7. McHenry has had trouble with Jacobs in the past, but Sobczak said there was no revenge factor involved. "We took our lumps with sophomores and juniors in the lineub. We put our time in. Now we are taking the dividends back," Sobczak said. "They realize the season is closing down with these three matches. They want to finish up winning. The kids did real well. I'm very proud of them." Chris Mann set the pace for the McHenry pinning-weekend by scoring a fall against John Bondi of Jacobs Friday in 47 seconds. Two other Warriors followed with pins of their own. While Lake Zurich worked on holding Johnsburg to only eight points, the Bears collected 14 points, with forward Bill Rabeor claiming eight of those points. The turnaround gave the Bears' a 35-34 lead at the end of the quarter. Both teams volleyed possession of the ball and the score, keeping the score knotted right down to the final second.
