« < Wonder Lake: FROST BITE GOLF OPEN IS THIS WEEKEND PAG E 5 -PLAINDFALER- WED N ESD A Y . JAi \U /v iv i The third annual Frost Bite Golf Open will be held Sunday, Feb. 12, with tee time beginning at 10 a.m. And you thought golf was only a summer .sport -- not here at Wonder Lake! During the summer months, our golf enthusiasts have to travel to nearby towns to ven ture out on the course, but during the winter, Wonder Lake has a huge course waiting to be played. The course is set out on the lake with the starting point off Beach 1 of Wonder Woods Subdivision. Golfers will be using a 5 iron and tennis balls, and will be stopping at designated "watering holes" to receive chili, hot buttered rum, brats, and other libation. Tickets can be purchased at the Old Mill Inn or from Bill Fitzgerald at 728-0424. NEW RESIDENT Wonder Woods Subdivision is happy to welcome some new residents. They are Greg and Joyce Neubauer, who are now at home on Wonder Woods Drive. Welcome to the community! CO. 1 AUX. The ladies of Co. I Firemen's Auxiliary had a very busy meeting recently to begin the new year. They set dates for all their fund raisers coming up in 1984. The first big event will be their card party Sunday, Mar. 11, at the firehouse; then, the Mother's Day Bake Sale May 13; Candlelight Bowl Oct. 13; Breakfast With Santa, Dec. 1; and the Fire ..Department Christmas Party Dec. 15. A date for the annual Firemen's Dance has not been made definite at this time. REGISTER If you are new to the area or have just let it slip by, don't forget to become a registered voter. "Marge Evans informs me she has just renewed her license as a registrar for the next year, so either she or any of the other registrars could help you out. If it is not convenient to see one of these people, you can always register at the McHenry County Courthouse. You have until Feb. 21 to register in order to be able to vote in the next election. RECUPERATING Joe Wurm, who has been a patient at Rockford Memorial Hospital for some time now, is recuperating and should be able to return home to Wonder Lake within the week. I'm sure that after he has a chance to settle back in at home, he would certainly appreciate hearing from some of his friends cheering him on to a speedy recovery. SPECIAL DAYS Jan. 28 is an extra special day for two Wonder Lake young people. Dana Diedrich of Wonder Center will be celebrating her birthday on that date. Venturing to the west side of Wonder Lake in Highland Shores, we will find Eric deGelder blowing out birthday candles on that same date. CALENDAR Jan. 25--Boys' Baseball Meeting, 8 p.m.-W.L. Inn Jan. 26--Deacon-Elders' Meeting, 7:30 p.m.-W.L. Bible Church Jan. 29--Missionary Sunday Service, 6 p.m.--W.L. Bible Church-Message by Otto Menolasino NelahKbfsW McCullom Lake: DISCUSS MOSQUITO ABATEMENT Lakemoor/Lilymoor: TAKING CARE OF THE BIRDS Watching the colorful and quietly dressed birds at this time of winter warms one's heart with pleasure. Our part of the scene is to provide seeds and grit necessary for their sustenance. Cardinals, the red beauties that bring such color to our cold landscape, particularly enjoy sunflower seeds, as do the chickadees, finches, grackles and some sparrows. Juncos like millet and finely cracked corn, as do other sparrows and the evening grosbeak. I have never seen one of those at our feeders.-Has anyone in our area? The grit may be supplied by adding crushed egg shells, which give the additional benefit of calcium. If a bird hits the window in this cold weather and is stunned, bring it indoors, place it on a newspaper, and cover with a larger cardboard box. As soon as it starts to move pr call, it is ready to be released. BIRTHDAY TIME Florence Koch of L^kemoor celebrates her day Jan. 16. On the 29th, Jennifer Lynn Mayo will be one whole year old. Jerry Lakeland Park: COOKIE SALE IS ON All of our local Girl Scout troops will be taking orders for cookies from Feb. 1 to the 15th. I'm sure you will be able to find some you like from the seven flavors to choose from. Your choices are scheduled to be delivered March 16. WANTED overweight men, women and teenagers to give up your excess pounds. Come Mondays at 7 p.m. where a TOPS group meets in the Ringwood United Methodist Church, 5307 Barnard Mill Road, Ringwood. STICKERS DUE If you don't have your 1984 vehicle sticker, be sure to purchase it by Jan. 31. Anyone driving a car or truck after midnight without one will be ticketed and have to pay a late charge. You have one more week to get to the city hall to buy yours. WHO ARE YOU? I've been told there are some new families living in Lakeland Park, but it's been too cold for their neighbors to go out to meet them. If you are new to the area, how about calling me at 385-7246 so we can all find out who you are. Scott will be wearing the badge of repentance on hisxight arm for three weeks. The refrigerator has two additional dents to show for its part in the learning lesson. CALENDAR Jan. 26-Lakemoor Village Meeting, 8 p.m. Jan. 27-Story time for pre- schoolers-McHenry Nunda Library, 10:30 a.m. Three village board members attended a meeting at the township building on Route 31 Tuesday evening, Jan. 17. It turned out to be a very in formative meeting. The township has been in vestigating and is now accepting bids for mosquito abatement. They will be treating the larvae stage (eggs) and not the adult stage. This treatment may start the first'week in April, and the cost to the village is very reasonable. It might be nice to enjoy* sitting out this coming summer in comfort. The township is also going to sponsor Dial-A-Ride. The test run will start the week of Jan. 23 through the 30th. You must give 24-hour notice and that week will be free. The number to call is Dawn Miller 385-4901 385-54671. This service will operate between the hours of 8:30^a.m. and 4 p.m. MOTHERS' MARCH Volunteers will be out collecting donations for the March of Dimes Sunday, Jan. 29, from 1 to 5 p.m. Your gift will help to prevent birth defects and their disabling after-effects. You may ask, "Where does my money go?" Forty percent of what is collected stays right here in our county and the remaining 60 percent goes towards research. I hope that you will be cour teous and generous to the volunteers; especi illy since I will be one of them, and most important, because this is such a worthwhile cause.
