CUPID HERE TO STAY -- The cherubic archer of tum-of-the-century greeting card (left) is an inspiration for a well- known greeting card company's valentine (right). "Sentimental valentines are right for communicating emotions that we think of as dating back to the beginning of time/' says Mary Ann Corrigan, product manager for the company. "They let people express feelings they might not be able to say in person." For example, the versing in the 1984 valentine is: "Cupid, with his magic darts, plants sweet thoughts in willing hearts-thoughts of love and happy sharing, new togetherness and caring." Old-fashioned cards seldom carried a verse. Research shows that men usually select the most extravagant valentines, choosing cards with traditional artwork and romantic versing. History of county revealed at BPW meeting The regular monthly meeting of the McHenry Business and Professional Women was called to order by President G. G. Havens, Monday, Jan. 16. She introduced those seated at the head table and then turned the meeting over to Hester Curry, Chairman of the Young Careerist Committee. Ms. Curry thanked her committee members for their help and introduced Louine Klontz, who is the McHenry BPW's candidate for Young Careerist of 1984. Louine gave a preview of her speech on "Equity-Our Future Now," which she will present in district competition. The program for the evening was a very interesting and in formative slide presentation by Nancy Fike, Curator of the McHenry County Historical Society, on the museum in Union, IL. A highlight of the meeting was the installation of six new members and Suzanne Jansen, who has been attending meetings but had not as yet been sworn in. They are Marylou Schaefer, Karen Thennes, Marian Hauri, Bernie Poczekaj, Karen Stevenson and Karen Putnam. The ceremony was presided over by Char Dunn, District IV Director. In response to a request for committee reports, Virginia Orr, Finance Chairman said it is time for a new budget and there will be minor changes as usual. She then gave a plug for the upcoming card party. Legislation Chairman Lynne Donarski stated she plans to have her committee do research as to whether or not the Illinois Domestic Violence Act is working as it is intended. They will also check on the functions of elected officials in McHenry County and look into job descriptions. The Foundation Committee reported the charges for the card party at St. Patrick Church and everyone agreed to have the church .women do kitchen cleanup. Scholarship Chairman Cathy Moehling advised there was currently $320 in the Maurie Taylor Scholarship Fund, and suggested a diversion from the previous method of awarding scholarships, giving out three ESTATE AUCTION SUNDAY, FCBRUARY 5, 1984 1:04 P.M. Ms. Donarski stated she had spoken to the chairman of concessions; all activities will be at Petersen Park; they will draw a map of the area to be used; and spaces will be assigned, taking into consideration the problem of similar booths located next to each other. She related an idea which came up at the last board meeting for a booth offering homemade desserts. .
