PAGE 17-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1984 yv '• ;< JOHNSBURG - Mike ^Roberts and his Johnsburg Skyhawk wrestling team I' would like to be greedy. Instead of just meeting their goal, they would love to \ surpass it. But as along as they, met it, who's com- grapplers lose, still reach goal Tlie Sky hawks lost their last dual match of the season, 32-25, to Grayslake Saturday. A win would have put Johnsburg one win over .50a, their goal set at the beginning of the season. Instead, the loss puts thAn right at their goal at 8-8-1 and their. Northwest Suburban Conference mark ended at 3-4. The Skyhawks now prepare for the NWSC meet this Friday and Saturday. "It was heartbreaking to lose," said Roberts. "A win would have put us at 4-3, instead of 3-4. "Reflecting back, I had great optimism for this team. The season has turned out to be very gratifying. We reached our goal. We wanted to be at .500. Going into the season I was skeptical we would reach that. But we reached our goal." While Roberts feels his wrestling squad has turned the corner of respectibility, he also noticed the John sburg crowd has now ap preciated the sport more. He noticed the crowd during the 119-pound match. The Skyhawks had already lost the first three matches. The Skyhawks* Shawn Kee was on his back ready to get pinned by the Rams' John Kavanagh. Kee escaped the hold and put Kavanagh on his back and pinned him. "That really erupted the crowd," Roberts said. "The crowd has never been a significance at Johnsburg wrestling meets. That was the first time in four years at Johnsburg I heard a crowd erupt. Kee recorded his pin at 1:09. Ed Klein at 98-pounds, Dave ShedBalkar at 105 and Scott Lehamn at 112 all lost. After Kee, Johnsburg's Jim Walker also lost, losing to BUI Dennis at 126-pounds 16- 4. „ Jim O'Brien came back for Johnsburg and decisioned Dave Bartells 12- 4 at 132. But the Skyhawks would lose the next two matches. Mike Cahill (138) lost 6-3 to Terry Boyd and Brian Hauck (145) was pinned by Joel Young. Johnsburg won two of the last three matches, but it wouldn't be, enough. Mark Dumelle pinned Steve Stewart at 1:30 at 155- pounds, while Pete Bjerning was pinned by the Rams' Bob Rauch in 5:54. Bentley Treat picked up a win by defeating Chris Raugh 7-6 at 185 and Jim Bentz won on a Grayslake forfeit. WARRIORS HOLD OFF continued from page 18 front end with 54 seconds left. Mike Bindi then stole the ball under McHenry's net. On the other end, his short-range shot hit nothing but air. Cary's Greg Wallis sent Scott Freund to the line with 21 seconds left. Freund's shot didn't fall, but Schmitt grabbed the rebound and was fouled by Ward. Schmitt hit each freebie with 18 seconds left and added a layup to close the scoring. Wallis missed the front end of a one- and-one in between. "We missed some nice op- portunites at the end - five- footers, free throws - and we let them get offensive rebounds. We were just a little off-key," COndill said. Cary was tone-deaf in the first half. The running, pressure Warriors shot a red-hot 68 percent (15-of-22) from the field for a 37-27 halftime lead. The Trojans missed point guard Brad Block. The senior was ill and kept his ball- handling and outside shooting skills on the bench with him most of the game. Pat Dunne added to Cary's woes by scoring 11 of his 15 points in the first 16 minutes. He also held Cary's leading scorer, GRAYSLAKE continued from page 18 the second quarter. The Skyhawks were able to outscore Grayslake 13-9 and got into halftime down 27-24. After outscoring Johnsburg 11-8 in the third quarter, Grayslake went back into the four-corner of fense. The Skyhawks couldn't overcome the Ram strategy, as the, Rams again outscored m£ati 12-8' fi aanijiit quarter. Joe Majercik led the John sburg scoring attack with 10 points, while Jeff Jayko added nine. Beck, however, was im pressed with the play of John Gallagher, who scored seven. "John Gallagher came off the bech and scored seven in the third quarter. It woke us up and got us in the ballgame in the second half."
