When all else fails, you take to your big chair and read. You feel somebody shaking you and saying, "It's time to wake up." Wake up? I just got to sleep. If man or beast didn't capture our pheasant, it flapped its We thought our beautiful feathered friend might stay around 'til spring when his fancy would send him forth to look for a playmate. We heard a discussion about sending and receiving Christ mas cards. One person claimed some people wait until they get a card, then rush to return one. ^ One woman admitted she has waited in Some cases and, if she received one, would send a New Year's greeting. One man thought there should be a clearing house to let people know when to scratch somebody off a list. That idea got too complicated. A lot of talk, but nothing settled. The group didn't mind the cost of cards as much as the 20 cents postage to mail them. I was knocked out of the box when the popular baseball banquet at Johnsburg took place. . Now, everybody tells me I missed the best one ever. The program furnished a lot of belly laughs. It is a pleasant surprise to hear from Lyle and Norma Turner from Elgin. The Turners resided in Or chard Beach for a spell, then packed up and moved near their original stamping grounds in Elgin. The letter says they miss our chats when meeting at Bimbo's. They were nice people to meet. We still have some real old post cards which Lyle gave us pertaining to St. Patrick's Day. They mention we probably have read the Irish Blessing "a million times", but sent it along as a reminder. It is nice to be remembered. That DePaul basketball team continues to give us the heebee- geebees. We watched them beat U.C.L.A. Saturday afternoon. Like teams of the last couple of years, they get a lead then let it fizzle away. / I maintain they can't stand prosperity. As in other games, those Blue Demons came on strong to win this one with the greatest of ease. Many memories loom up when we drive past what was once "Grandma's Farm". Driving south on Green St. (originally named Elgin Road) you come to Idyll Dell Road. That was crossroads. known as the v v • "V -- V Old Timers told me of meeting their friends at the crossroads in the evening for sociability. One lady said, "We even danced on the roadway." I suppose they could do a square dance or circle two step without having to glide over the gravel. From home out to Grandma's seemed like a long trip with a horse and buggy, team and wagon or horseback. The big climb was Knox's Hill. Horses had to pull. Now a car goes over the hill without a grunt or a groan. Now that the severe winter weather is over, Harry Dean is wearing a cap.
