AGE 14 - PLA1NPEALER - FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1984 general y^i ici ai News Temporary entrance at hospital A temporary front entrance has been opened on the east side of Memorial Hospital because of remodeling of the front lobby and business offices, Keith Poisson, Memorial Hospital, assistant administrator, General Services, said this week. This entrance will be locked at 10 p.m. and opened at 6 a.m. During these hours, the Blakely street entrance leading to the Emergency services depart ment, and the adjacent parking lot will be available. Outpatients should continue to park in the outpatient lot on Blakely street, Poisson said. L PLANNING O < z, 32nd of a series by Kenneth J. Chadwick, C.P.A. - LIFE INSURANCE and TAXES (Some General Rules) Questions arc often asked about what's deductible and what's taxable in the area of life insurance. Generally speaking, life insurance premiums paid by an individual are not deductible on his income tax return, and life insurance proceeds received by a beneficiary are not taxable income. Here are some other basic rules to keep in mind about life insurance and taxation.* 1. Though life insurance proceeds paid on the death of the insured are not taxable income, the in terest earned on the proceeds while left with the in surance company is taxable. 2. A widow or widower is entitled to exclude $1,000 annually of such interest earned by insurance proceeds held by the insurance company. 3. Dividends earned on unmatured life insurance policies are not taxable income until such time as the dividends exceed the cost of the insurance contract. Such cost recovery seldom happens. 4. Life insurance proceeds that are paid to the estate of the insured person are considered a part of the estate for computing estate taxes. However, if the policy had been owned by someone other than the insured, the proceeds are not included in the decendent's estate. 5. Premiums on life insurance paid by an employer for an employee are considered taxable in come to the employee, except for group term life in surance premiums for coverage not in excess of $50,000 per employee. 6. Up to $5,000 of death benefits paid by an employer upon the death of an employee are tax free to the recipient. 7. Special rules apply to the taxation of amounts received as an "annuity" under a life insurance con tract. Purchasing life insurance should be done with the assistance of your tax advisor in order to give ade quate consideration to the tax consequences involve ed. Kenneth J. Hill will conduct the two auctions that will feature products and services of exhibitors at the 1984 AAcHenry Area Chamber of Commerce Trade Fair March 30, 31 and April 1. "What-am-I-bid, What-am-I- bid, What-am-I-bid??" is the jargon that will be heard from the stage of the Learning Center of Parkland School March 30 and 31 beginning at 8:30 p.m. This 1984 feature of the McHenry Chamber of Com merce Annual Trade Fair is a feature that is trend in this decade. Auctions are becoming more popular as a pasttime as well as a real source of acquisitions for collectors and bargain hunters. The 1984 Trade Fair will present the opportunity for devotees, as well as novices, to enjoy:the action of an auction; for fun ot for prize or profit. Approximately 125 items will be offered for sale at each of the two auctions. All items will be the products or services of exhibitors of the fair. Most items will be under $100, but there will be exceptions. Many of the items will be on display during the hours of the fair, but all items will be displayed and marked with lot numbers at least an hour before auction time. The seasoned fans know, but the novices are ad vised to pre-select the items they are interested in bidding on, because once the auction is in motion, the opportunity to own that item can be a very fleeting experience. On an average, an item goes over the auction block in one to one-and- a-half minutes. Hill is a graduate of the Mason City College of Auc tioneering in Mason City, Iowa. However, her interest in the field goes back as far as her roots. Her uncle owned ^n auto auction and it is there that she began her career at a very early age when she held positions of clerk or ringman for his events. This family interest is per petrating itself, one of Col. Hill's five children now assists her as ringman for her auctions. Col.Hill holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago, and an Associate Art degree in Criminology from Harper College. Now a resident of Spring Grove, she had been a Long Lake resident for 20 years. When asked what would draw a first timer to an auction, Col. Hill stated "Fun. It's just lots of fun. Fun to watch it all happen. Fun to see the treasures change hands. Fun to see people so happy with their purchases. Fun to see the whole process. I'm so glad that the Chamber is making this opportunity available to the guests of Trade Fair." Although selling is not permitted during Trade Fair, some items that will be part of the exhibitors' displays may be offered at auction, to be picked up at the end of Trade Fair, after 5 p.m. April 1. Parkland School at Rt. 120 and Ringwood Road is the location of the 1984 Trade Fair. POLICE TICKETS Joseph A. Raven, 4605 Crystal Lake Road, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Joseph P.
