SECTION 2 - PAGE 1 - PLAlNfrEALER - WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY X, 1984 Keepin' Healthy: Chewing tobacco may be 'in thing' but not smart In some circles, chewing tobacco is the "in" thing to do. Athletes, entertainers, college and high school students are chewing tobacco. Even one of the president's advisers chews tobacco. But though it's the "in" thing, is it the smart thing to do? When the germ theory was proved by scientists, it was discovered that dormant tuburculosis organisms and other germs could survive and spread by air. Almost im mediately it was realized that spitting on the floor or into a Historical group gets donation A motion to pay $500 to the McHenry County Historical Society passed unanimously at a recent council meeting. The m o n e y w a s requested by the society to help defray the cost of printing an historic map and brochure of the City of McHenry. The council also voted to pay the annual contribution to the Northeastern Ill inois Plan Commission (NIPC). The con tribution requested was in the amount of $705. The contribution formula is based on population, Mayor Joseph Stanek said. By the end of the 19th century, tobacco spitting had become socially unacceptable and unlawful. The use of chewing tobacco went underground for awhile, but the habit resurfaced again about a decade ago. I think it would decline again if the young people who are making a fad out of it realized that they're jeopardizing their health. Although chewing tobacco is sold in twisted quids or con tainers that do not carry war nings of the health hazards, it is still tob|pco, and it is habit forming. Chewing calls for a golf-ball- size wad or quid of tobacco to be placed in the pouch of the cheek and sucked; so tobacco juice constantly bathes the teeth, gums, tongue and the inner tissues of the mouth. Habitual use of chewing tobacco can cause receding gums, greater wear and tear on tooth enamel and tooth decay. It may also cause leukoplakia. Leukoplakia is a condition that causes leathery white patches inside the mouth that are the result of direct contact with tobacco juice. It is estimated that there will be 27,000 new cases of oral cancer in 1983 and almost 10,000 deaths, most of which will be caused by either heavy smoking and drinking, or by the use of chewing tobacco. The warning signs of oral cancer could be a sore-on your lip, tongue, in your mouth, or your throat - that bleeds easily and doesn't heal. Or it could be a lump or thickening, or a reddish or whitish patch that persists. If you have one of these conditions, you should J>e checked by your dentist or doctor. If you develop any problems in chewing, swallowing or moving your tongue or jaws, you should also see your dentist or doctor. Oral cancer is usually treated by surgery and radiation therapy. The survival rate varies considerably depending on the site of the cancer. If the cancer is on the lip, it is more easily detected and treated, and the five-year survival rate is 84 percnt. If, on the other hand, the cancer is in the throat, the five- year survival rate is only 22 percent. Persons who survive five years after treatment are usually considered cured. Cancer of the larynx patients who survive five years still have a lifetime problem to contend with. It is often cured, but usually only by removal of the larynx which is the main organ of speech.
