4 Observe World Marriage day Man/ local area married couples think their marriages deserve more than just an an­ niversary card once a year. According to them, American society pays more attention to marriages breaking up than to the majority of couples who have achieved stability and happiness. In an effort to emphasize the positive aspects of marriage and its importance - to society, thousands of couples nationwide will celebrate Sunday, Feb. 12, as World Marriage Day. The theme for this year's celebration is One In Heart. According to Denny and Judi Dal Pra, spokescouple for the group, the World Marriage Day celebration, which will begin at 5 p.m. at St. Peter's Cathedral, is designed for married couples and their families and will feature a Mass celebrated by Bishop O'Neill and priests of the Rockford Diocese with a reception following. Marriage vows will be renewed at this Mass. World Marriage Day is sponsored by Worldwide Marriage Encounter, the world's largest pro-marriage organization. The Marriage Encounter weekend, a crash course in communication for happily married couples, has been experienced by over 5,000 couples in the Rockford area. The Dal Pras said this year World Marriage Day will -be celebrated in hundreds of churches of all denominations and in many varied events, large and small. Though the effort to have the second Sunday in February proclaimed World Marriage Day is only four years old, it was proclaimed an official "day" by 46 governors and hundreds of mayors during last year's campaign. A similar response is expected this year and a move is on to have the " day recognized nationally, like Mother's or Father's Day. The pastor elected by a majority vote was Roger Alan Elliott, who had been recommended by the church call committee. He will assume his pastoral duties officially the first week of March. Out of six nominees for the Church Council, the following three members were elected for a term of 3 years: Norma Crock, of Spring Grove, Lillian Boutin and Emil Marunde, both of McHenry. The Council is the governing body of All Saints Church. Pastor Elliott, 31, graduated from Emporia State University, Kas., in 1975 with a B.S. in Business Administration. After graduation he was employed as a territory sales representative tor Keebler Company. During this time he felt an awareness of Christian ministry. He gave up his sales job and entered the Lutheran School of Theology Seminary in Chicago, where he graduated in 1983 with a Master's degree i^ Divinity. He served his pastoral in­ ternship at the United Church of Berwyn, 111. He was recently married on Jan. 14 to his second wife, Lorene Boynton. He has one daughter, 6 years old, from his previous marriage, who now lives with the mother in Chicago. While awaiting a call to the ministry, the Rev. Elliott was working as a self-employed electrician.
