Two car collision told near Market Place SECTION 2 - PAGE 3 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1984 McHenry Police investigated a two-car collision on Industrial Drive and issued a citation to one of the drivers involved. Kenneth L. Theobald, 7227 Wheaton, Fox Lake, was ticketed for failure to yield the right-of-way after he pulled out of the Market Place shopping center parking lot into the path of another ail to. The other vehicle was operated by Clement J. Wirfs, 3830 McCullom Lake Road, McHenry, who was not in jured. Theobald said he saw no cross- traffic when i)e pulled into the roadway. Maria Pfister, 7708 Oak Drive, Wonder Lake, found that cigarettes could be hazardous to her motoring when she reached for a cigarette while driving along Draper Road Feb. 9 and wound up in the ditch with over $250 in damage to the front of her car. The incident occurred about 1:15 a.m. according to McHenry police records. She told investigators, who came to her aid, that as she reached across the seat her right foot was "pulled by a rotor located just above the ac celerator pedal" and she lost control and left the roadway. No tickets were issued or injuries reported. On Feb. 7 Karen D. Johnson, Name concert performers C o m m u n i t y C o n c e r t s Association, serving McHenry County, begins its tenth season next fall. Hie association was founded to bring quality artistic talents to McHenry County and surrounding area. Schaefer, 1022 Park Street, McHenry. Ms. Johnson told police that she didn't see the oncoming vehicle on Route 120 until too late. Ms. Schaefer reported that when the Johnson car pulled out in front of her she couldn't avoid it. No injuries were reported. Damages were estimated as $250 to the right rear of the Schaefer car with no damage reported for the Johnson vehicle. An unidentified brown vehicle triggered a collision between two oncoming cars on Elm Street, near Front Royal. In volved were Thomas J. Hen- nessy, 8251 O'Connor Road, River Grove, and Timothy P. Hayes, 3606 Young Street McHenry. Each vehicle sustained damage estimated at over $250. Hennessy told investigators that as he was westbound in the center lane, the Hayes car crossed the median strip and struck his auto. Hayes said that a "brown vehicle" made a quick lane chang^ to the inside and forced him over the line. A witness confirmed his statement. No injuries or tickets were reported, according to the McHenry police. Judith H. Borgeson, 14623 Nichols Road, Hebron, was sadder Feb. 6 after she pulled out from the parking lot at Happy Jack's 4911 W. Elm Street, about 12:15 p.m. and struck a car driven by Michael H. Harrington, 1417 W. Bayview Lane, McHenry, which had paused to enter the lot. Harrington claimed no damage to his car, but Ms. Borgeson's vehicle sustained $250 in damages to the left front and investigating officers issued her a citation for improper starting vof a stopped vehicles. According to a report received at the McHenry County Sheriff's office, a car driven by Julie Ann Tibbs, 611 S. McHenry, sustained about $200 in body side damage and destroyed about 75 feet of fence and posts worth $125 after her car skidded off Route 120 east of Chapel Hill Road. -- --general News Winter driving league issues motorist warning While the worst of this win ter's record-setting weather may be over, the Safe Winter Driving League reminded Illinois motorists that there is likely to be another few weeks of snow and ice. "After surviving the last month's sub-zero temperatures along with substantial snow falls and ice storms, Illinois motorists may have become over confident, a major factor in many winter driving ac cidents," warned Ross G. Wilcox, secretary of the Chicago-based League. As an example, Wilcox said that most motorists drive far too fast on snow-packed and icy roads for the traction that is actually available. Citing the worst possible- glare ice at a temperature near the freezing mark-he reported that tests by the National Safety Council's Committee on Winter Driving Hazards have shown that the braking distance at a speed of only 20 mph can be as much as 260 feet, somewhere around 15 car lengths. A sure way to guard against over confidence when driving on a slippery pavement, according to Wilcox, is to make it a prac tice to get the "feel" of the road so you'll know how slick it really is. "Whenever there is any question about the road con dition, try your brakes or gun the engine momentarily to find out whether the wheels skid or spin. If the car has any tendency to skid or fishtail, then it's time to slow way down and do all maneuvering-steering, braking and accelerating- with a delicate touch," he advised.
