PAGE 15-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1984 Second place battle in Fox Valley heats up With Woodstock winning the Fox Valley Conference crown last week in its 62-49 victory over Crystal Tj»k» Central the Warriors and Jacobs will be battling for second place. Both teams are 6-4 with two games to play. Tonight the Warriors host Dundee- Crown, while Jacobs visits Cary-Grove. Then next week the Warriors close out regular season play at Jacobs. Either way, the Warriors have to win at least one of the two remaining gnnw for second place, and a pair of victories will nail down the runnerup spot. Of course, there is the possibility of both the Warriors and Jacobs 1 raring their final two games, but we don't like to think about it. The Warriors really put on a second half rally last week against the Gators of Gary Collins. Trailing at one time 39-28, the local crew hit for fifteen straight points for a 43-39 lead, and finally won in a real thriller 47-45. It was the second win for the master over his former pupil (Ken Ludwig versus Gary Collins) this season, and the first time the Warriors won both games in a season. This game even had me standing on my feet at the end, along with a lot of Warrior fans. Saturday night the jum ping jacks from Waukegan West were just too much for the Warriors. The Waukegan crew blocked shots all over the floor. They are a nice ballclub, and more than enough good competition. An attendance record for a regular season high school basketball game last week when over 10,000 fans were at the Peoria Convention Center to watch Peoria Manuel play Pekin. Manuel of- On the Sideline' Dick Rabbitt ficials felt that their 2,400 seat gym would not hold all the fans wanting to attend the game. This was brought upon by the fact that in an earlier contest between the two schools, over 1,000 people were turned away from the Pekin gym which holds 4,200 seats. Manuel, the second ranked team in the state, won 45- 41. ••• Warrior officials are hoping for a couple of full houses when the IHSA regional is held here the first week in March. With the Tigers and Gators meeting in the opening game, a lot of Crystal Lake people should be in at tendance. Especially after the two teams square off the previous Friday night and then come back on Monday night for a rematch. Tuesday night the gym should be packed to the rafters. The Skyhawks of Ben Beck for the first time in history will meet the Warriors of Ken Ludwig. This should be a whale of a ballgame. I'm sure the upper deck will be open on that night. ••• Speaking of the Skyhawks, former Skyhawk coach Bob Kies has his Notre Dame of Quincy ranked in the top in class A. The Raiders should win their own regional, but the popular Bob may fine it difficult in sectional play. There are a couple of good teams he must face in order to get to Champaign. Those little schools of 300 to 400 play a tough brand of basketball in that part of the state. ••• We like the new rule in high school basketball, only two timeouts per half. Warrior fans really enjoyed it last Saturday night when the game against Waukegan West was over before 9 p.m.. We can remember when the last two minutes of a game would take nearly 30 minutes to play. ••• Down memory lane, with Dundee- Crown coming to Buckner gym, we go back to the good old days of 1975-76 when the Warriors were really on a roll. They defeated Crown in a North Suburban game 94-58 and it could have been more except for the kind heart of Ken Ludwig. Terry 'Radar' Reilly led four Warriors in double figures with 16 for the easy romp. Dale Bernhard, the fine Crown forward hit the nets for the game high of 30 points, but had no help from his teammates. But, like in other sports, not everyone is given the job to score. Some have other duties, which are overlooked by fans. McHenry's Scott Freund plays a role which only his fellow teammates and coaches sometimes respect. He's the Warriors point guard. A role mostly related to leading, than scoring. Last Friday, however, Freund was able to fulfill his duty as a playmaker and score points. He drilled in 14 points in McHenry's 47-45 win over Crystal Lake South. He added six points on Saturday in a loss to Waukegan West. Scott is the son of Jim and Doris Freund of McHenry. "Since he has been at the point, we have played 50 percent better," said Warrior coach Ken Ludwig. "He's made a dif ference, no doubt about it. "Against Waukegan West he didn't commit a turnover. Against South he only had one turnover. You have to have a kid like him to handle the ball and keep his eyes on the floor." A 5-foot-10 junior, Freund is averaging 6.6 points a game. He's shooting from the field with 51 percent accuracy and hitting KARPAVICIUS PLAYED continued from page 16 Karpavicius said. "When I came here I had no outside shot. Just inside shots. I'm now working on my outside shooting, shooting 300 shots a day from the free throw line range. It has helped a great deal. "Most people who shoot 300 shots a day are shooting 70 percent from the free throw line area." From time to time, Kar pavicius still goes for the rebounds like she did as a Warrior. Scoring and reboun ding depends on the opponent. "If they are playing a zone it's a lot easier for me to score. I plant myself at the free throw line area. "Whenever I'm able to, 1 crash the boards, unless against a team like Truman. Truman is real quick and I have to fall back." Of all of Karpavicius' qualities, Edwards likes her defensive and thinking skills the most. "She plays a lot better than .scoring would indicate," Ed wards said. "She's our top defensive player and is put on the other teams' top offensive player. She out-thinks the other kids. Her thinking on the court makes her an advanced player." The MCC squad is made up of first and two-year player from throughout the Fox Valley area. Many of the girls that are Karpavicius' teammates now, were her opponents on the high school courts. That aspect had an unusual feeling for her. let's talk SPORTS LOG Benefit bowl planned for Dole The Tuesday Night Businessmen's Bowling League will host a benefit bowl Sunday, March 4, at the Palace Bowl, 3400 N. He jeads the team with 79 assists and has only committed 42 turnovers on the season. There's no doubt, according to Freund, Friday's game was his best as a Warrior. But he admits he usually not a scorer. "My job isn't to score," said Freund. "I shoot when I have the open shot, but when a person has a better shot I pass off to him." Being a junior point guard on the team could be difficult, Freund says he grown com fortable with it. "It was hard at first. I was a little nervous, but I'm getting over it now." "At first it was strange," Karpavicius said. "At the first practice I saw Kecia Knudsen (former Woodstock High School player). We were like enemies. I said, 'Oh my God, she is playing here.' They are just like anybody else. Once you get to know them, they're great." Karpavicius does have plans on attending a four-year college and playing basketball. But at the present moment, she plans to play for MCC next year and work on her game. The win raised Johnsburg's record to 5-7 in the Northwest Suburban Conference and 11-8 overall. Johnsburg fell behind 14-11 after one quarter of play, but the Skyhawks came back to take the lead before halftime, 28-26. Johnsburg never fell behind after the first half. Johnsburg coach blamed the slow start and scoring problems to foul trouble. "It was partially my fault/' Fahey said. "I had them put on the press to long and we were picking up too many fouls. I'm still happy with the win."
