•i.' Employee training center surpasses goals SECTION 2 - PAGE 5 - PtJUNDEALER . FRIDAY, FEBRUARY M, •We have exceeded or sur passed our original planning figures for the first year operating MCC's Center for Industrial and Business Training", said Center Director Jim Sailors when questioned about its rapid success. "We only planned to conduct about eight courses in the first year. We have now organized about 30." In response to needs voiced by businesses in McHenry County, courses conducted since the Center's inception July 1, 1983, have included: Career Plan ning, Introduction to Data Processing,, Executive Leadership Skills, Developing Leadership Skills, Training the Trainer, Statistical Quality Control, Basic Hydraulics, Basic Electricity, Retail Sales, Industrial Communications, and Computer Numerically Con trolled (CNC) Milling. The number of requests for courses has necessitated the addition of two part-time coordinators and instructors as contractual employees of the Center. Elmer Nyberg, of Crystal Lake, started last summer and now handles management, supervisory and sales courses. John Yerley, also of Crystal Lake, joined the Center staff in late December, and is responsible for technical courses and basic skill development classes. With Nyberg and Yerley taking some of the pressure off Center Director Jim Sailors, he is able to spend his time coor dinating the Center's activities: writing contracts and HITS Clem Wirfs recently presented a plaque with a clock inset to John Regner, McHenry Township highway com missioner. During a recent visit to the newly remodeled road district offices, Wirfs noticed the bare walls and handmade a plaque with clock from black walnut in the shape of the State of Illinois. Wirfs had also TAKE OFF V • 'Vl Mil f WITH $250,000 OF FLIGHT INSURANCE AT NO ADDITIONAL COST PROVIDED TO YOU THROUGH BERGNER'S TRAVEL HEADQUARTERS WITH EACH PLANT TICkET PURt HASTE) Fully computerized United Airlines Apollo reservation system • All airlines • Advance check-ins • Car rentals Motel reservations FOR FULL DETAILS. According to Sailors, com panies the Center contacts are shocked that someone is ac tually willing to sit down with them and evaluate their needs. Traditionally, schoolsTiave set back and people have come to them. Business men are used to getting brochures in the mail referring to seminars and classes being fifeld in faraway places, about subjects that might or might not be of interest to them. MCC's Center offers them tailor-made programs, at a reasonable price, close to home, or even on the company's own premises. "Rather than sitting around waiting for the telephone to ring, we make visitations," adds Sailors. "Problems are targeted before they surface and the appropriate service is matched- up with it." Contracts continue to be written further identifying the training needs of McHenry County businesses. Courses planned for the period from March through June of 1984 include matter such as Basic Pneumatics, Statistical Quality Control, Blueprint Reading, Production and Inventory Control, Industrial Purchasing, Maintenance of CNC Programmable Machines, Basic Welding, Fork Lift Licensing and safety courses. Computer courses continue to be in great demand. In troduction to Programming, Introduction to Data Processing, Management In formation Systems and Com puter literacy Introduction to Computer Logic, CNC Programming, Introduction to BASIC Programming and Computer Hardware-Software Concepts are all courses scheduled to be held this spring. As communication continues between the Center and McHenry County companies, requests for courses other than technical ones have arisen. The Center has responded with the development of classes in In terviewing Skills, Chamber of C o m m e r c e P e r s o n n e l Management, Supervisory Writing Skills, Finance and Accounting for Non-Financial Managers, Listening Skills and other communications courses. Paddock Street, Crystal Lake, in the Central Elementary School. The causes of soil erosion and the status of Illinois' voluntary program to control soil erosion are explained in these slide programs which will be moderated by Dan Schmoker, former executive director of the McHenry County Soil and Water Conservation District. Sch moker also will discuss the differences among the techniques used for fertilizer application in conventional tillage and in zero tillage or reduced tillage. The first slide program, "Raindrops and Bombs", highlights the damaging effects of rain on soil. "T by 2000", the second program, describes the Illinois plan to control soil erosion by the year 2000. The goal of this voluntary program is to achieve erosion tolerance levels that range from 1 to 5 tons of soil loss per acre per year. Presently 40 percent of Illinois' agricultural land is suffering from excessive erosion, which clogs rivers and streams and takes valuable nutrients from the soil. Fol lowing Schmoker ' s presentation and the discussion on soil erosion, time will be set aside for letter" writing on current environmental issues. Refreshments also will be served.
