Warriors PAGE 15 - PLA1NDEALER- FRIDAY, MARCH t. It64 first encounter with Skyhawks The long awaited battle: In the regional game at 1 Tuesday night the Wa Johnsburg Skyhawks #39 game between the two It was a hard fought two teams that redly wanted to game. As winning coach the Warriors said after the teams played hard basketball* concur with that No, the winner is not going to be i in Champaign in a couple of Week the state finals. But one would thought the state title was on the the game Tuesday night. Bouquets are in order to both, cheering sections. They cc themselves like ladies and They screamed, they ytifod, they cheered on their teams' basketv for basket, free throw for free throw, but not once did they get out of hand or out of order. It is a credit to both schools.and the students for displaying fine sport smanship. As we wished, the upper deck was opened, and a good size crowd obsSved the game from way above the pUtylng floor. I think we will have to postpone the indoor hockey and tag games that were mentioned in this column last week. Skyhawk coach Ben Beck and his squad have to be given a tip of the fedora for their sportsmanship in congratulating the Warriors afiWr the game. It was a big order to getthrough the Warrior fans to seek out file players and coach, but the popular coach and his players got the job done. I for one, ob serving this from the upper deck, think it was a nice gesture. On the Sideline4 Dick Rabbitt Crystal Lake South with a record of 4-8. He made some mistakes, picking Dundee-Crown for second, and Cary- Grove for last place. Cary-Grove tied for fourth, and Dundee-Crown tied for fifth place. Back in November, Dave Ififaevc made his annual picks for the Fox Valley Conference basketball race, and he came up a winner with Wooditock. Although the Streaks finished 11-1, Dave had them for 9-3 and champions. lie did have two teams on target. He fed the Warriors with a record of 0-6, and Dave and I have seen all Warrior tegular season games, along with tourney games at Sycamore and Wheeling. To pass away the time, we make picks of various items of concern in the various places we visit. Along with my son Mike, we also picked the differential in score between the Warriors and opponents. Mike had 10-of-20 games on the button. Don Wattles and I will be taking him to Arlington Park this summer with us to pick a couple of winners. After all our travels this season, we have come up with the following: Best Popcorn - McHenry, worst Popcorn - Fremd. Best seating - our own Buckner Gym, again for the second straight year the worst seating - the upper row at Jacobs. The temperature in all gyms was pretty good this season. Best parking - Fremd, worst parking - Crystal Lake South. Best concession - Dundee-Crown (they had a lot of seating for the fans), worst concession - Immaculate Con ception of Elmhurst (a card table six flights down, two candy bars for sale and no popcorn). Best pep band - Cary-Grove (100 member band playing). Best pom pom squad -- McHenry and Fremd (both were excellent this year). Most im pressive National Anthem - Fremd. Best programs - McHenry had a nice program, but Immaculate Conception had a abort history of the state tourney in their program. Best P.A. system - Cary-Grove, worst P.A. - McHenry and Dundee-Crown. Best lighting - McHenry and Crystal Lake Central, worst lighting - Wood stock. Best team - Immaculate Conception. Best cheerleaders - the Warriors cheerleaders again took home the Oscar for the season. When you sit in a car and go back and forth to games all over the area, you can't just talk about the weather or the ballgame. It makes good conservation on a cold winter night. We know some of the loyal Warrior fans whom we saw at all the games may disagree. Congratulations to Mark Peterson for his selection to the Fox Valley all- conference team. The coaches did the selection last Saturday morning, and as an interested observer, I felt the coaches did a fine job in their selection for the past season. Going down memory lane this week, we go back to the 1974-75 season. The Warriors lost to Zion-Benton 63-62 at Zion for their only loss in, the 10-team North Suburban conference. The ZeeBees finished 13-0, while the Warriors ended up in second place with a 12-1 record. The Warriors finished the season with 23 wins and only five losses. McHenry 62 K. Scott Dixon was a member of the first Johnsburg team and had played as a McHenry Warrior before the division. He admitted that he too had wanted to play against his old team mates. "I did want to play McHenry after we left, but we knew due to scheduling that it wouldn't happen for us. Now, I think it would be a good game every year, especially for fan interest. Echoing the sentiment was Randy Swikle, a member of the Johnsburg High School faculty. "Both McHenry and Johnsburg have fans who generate positive enthusiasm. In games like this, what happens in the bleachers is just as important as what happen downt the court." McHenry's golf coach Charlie Cuda felt positive about seeing a yearly match-up. "It's natural with the rivalry that McHenry should play schools like John sburg and Marian Central as well. It is a good game for the crowd and good for the schools at the gate too." Hauck hits winning shot Theresa Hauck hit a 20-foot jumps shot from the corner with five second left on the clock to break a 45-45 tie and give the Johnsburg Skyhawks a 47-45 win over Grayslake last Monday. Hauck led a balanced John sburg scoring attack with 14 points, while Vicki DeBeau scored 12 and Michele Swart- zloff added 10. When I get psyched, I go nuts," said Schmitt. William is the son of Leon and Judy Schmitt. Ludwig told reporters after the game there was no on of the floor higher than Schmitt. "He just decided to play basketball," said Ludwig. Schmitt was delighted with the starting assignment, but he was even happier with the win. "This was a total team effort. We didn't do anything special. The team finally came around for the fans. It's great to win one like that." Ludwig knew Schmitt cpykl come through for the Warriors when the opportunity arose. "He worked hard all season. He didn't have many opportunities and he struggled. He has a good attitude and keeps our team loose. Billy and Dave Wolf are the team comedians. We needed a little bit of that this year."
