HetahSors © Extension People: Early corn vigor debated Early planting and reduced tillage often result in corn seed being placed into soil barely warm enough to permit ger mination. As a result, there has been renewed emphasis on the development and use of hybrids with good "early vigor". While early vigor is generally viewed as a positive trait, the term is not an easy one to define. Most growers think of vigor as the ability of seed to produce a uniform stand of healthy plants, especially under less-than- favorable conditions. This suggests that corn with good vigor must be able to both emerge well under cool, and often wet, soil conditions and grow well once the plant has emerged. These two traits are not identical, however, and a hybrid may have one and not the other. Cold tolerance is usuallly rated by an index that takes into account the rate and percentage of emergence, as well as the rate of early growth. While some companies are beginning to rate cold tolerance of hybrids, currently there is no standard rating system for this trait. While there may be genetic differences in enzymes thai control germination processes, the minimum germination temperature for most present available dent hybrids is within the 45 to 50 degrees F. range. However, the irate at which the germination process takes place may vary among hybrids. r Cowlin ordered that firearms owned by Roebke be surren dered and also ordered that while Roebke is released from jail on bond, he must have no contact with witnesses in last week's two-day bench trial. Roebke, who has been held in county jail since his March 2 conviction, faces a term of imprisonment of not less than four years and up to 15 years.
