} c New McHenry lager makes debut at brewery SECTION 2 - PAGE I - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, MARCH M. 19M 50 YEARS AGO - (Taken from the files of March 22, 1934). , Hundreds of invited guests attended the party given by the McHenry Brewing co., at the brewery where they all had an opportunity to sample the new "McHenry Lager", the beer Whidi is due to establish a wonderful reputa t ion throughout the territory for both quality and taste. McHenry's Little German band provided appropriate music for the event. McHenry Lager is being offered for sale today. The tavern and dining room at Oak Park Hotel, Pistakee Bay, was bombed Thursday morning, almost completely wrecking the building and causing con­ siderable damage to the hotel. Hie big hotel, which is one of the oldest and best known summer resorts in this section of the country, is owned by Joe Mertes, who ran the place for 35 years, but for the past eight years it has been under the management of William Mertes, a son of the owner. 40 YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 23. 1944). Increased postal rates and fees for money orders, registered, insured and C.O.D. mail will become effective March 25, 1944. While the new order does not effect McHenry as greatly as other nearby cities, nevertheless, local citizens will need to observe some of the changes. The three-act play, "Wings Over Washington", has been selected by Miss Helen Stevens and Miss Maurie Taylor for the senior class play. The date set for the presentation is April 21. Illinois Bell Telephone Company has filed a tariff revision with the Illinois Commerce Commission in Spr ingf ie ld which, when ef­ fective, will establish Pistakee Highlands as a separate ex­ change. The change will be made effective April 19. About 250 customers will be in the new exchange. Customers will be able to call both McHenry and Fox Lake on a flat-rate (toll- free) basis. Construction of considerable outside plant equipment was required to make the new exchange possible. Announcement was made this week by Dr. William A. Nye, that Dr. A. L. Haydary will be associated with his office in the future. Dr. Haydary specializes in obstetrics and gynecology. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois and served his internship and residency at St. Luke's hospital, Chicago. He was with the Army in Okinawa, where fur two years he headed the ob­ stetric and gynecologic department of the base hospital. 10 YEARS AGO (Taken from the fil^s of March 15, 1974). The Illinois ^Bell Telephone Company informed county authorities of several incidents involving vandalism and theft of their property. When a repairman was sent to Pistakee Highlands at Broadway and Woodland to repair four sets of wires which had been cut, he also discovered that the lock had been removed from a patch box at that location. Repairs were made, but about an hour later it was discovered that 15 sets of wires nod-been cut since the repairs. It was relieved a wire cutter may have been used. Varsity wrestlers receiving awards~aTtfie award banquet were Ken Scanlin for most improved and Steve Hurckes captured awards for most pins and most takedowns. Mike Thornton was voted most valuable wrestler.
