MARCH 16. 1984 • Q6tl6r8l News N V Neurological assessment series presented for local RNs Cancer Crusade will open in city April 1 Mrs. Betsy Les, Income Development chairman of the McHenry County unit of the American Cancer Society, has announced that the 1984 Cancer Crusade is scheduled to begin Sunday, April 1, with American Cancer Society volunteers urging the McHenry area residents to "Give Yourself the Chance of a Lifetime'/. Mrs. Les noted \that "American Cancer Society crusaders will be trying to reach as many residents of the com munity as possible during the first week of April. While seeking to reach a statewide goal of $7.9 million dollars, volunteers will also be distributing a leaflet entitled "Give Yourself the Chance of a Lifetime", which provides each age group with specific in formation on how they can fcantly increase their odds lg long and healthy lives." Crusade chairman went point out that "research Is us that 60 percent of all rs are preventable, and it early cancer is curable in to 90 percent of all cases. Ith the public's continued jport of ACS programs we'll learn more about preventing cancer and reducing its effect on our lives." Mrs. Les concluded by urging the McHenry community to give generously to ACS volunteers when they call, and take ad vantage of the information they are providing, so that the American Cancer Society can continue its research and offer the McHenry public the "chance of a lifetime". MEALER Pvt. Robert M. Mealer, son of Jack L. and Jackie M. Cogdill of 3808 Buchanan Road, McHenry, has completed an Army food service specialist course at Fort Jackson, S.C. The course trained personnel to prepare and serve food in large and small quantities. Students received training in baking, field kitchen operations, and the operation of an Army dining facility. FOR ABOUT A 14-part series on neurological assessments for nurses is being co-sponsored by Northern Illinois Medical Center (McHenry Hospital), and Memorial Hospital for McHenry County, Woodstock. The class was developed for registered nurses who work with patients who have suffered spinal or head injuries. The special course is the first combined effort in an educational program for the two hospitals. Cindy Amore, RN, Northern Illinois Medical Center education instructor, and Pat Beard, RN, education depart- mant, Memorial Hospital, coordinated the series. Rodrigo Merino-Roldan, MD, a neuroloist on staff at both hospitals, is teaching the course, which is held in McHenry or Woodstock on alternating weeks. Richard E. Lind, MD, vascular surgeon on staff at both hospitals also will teach a segment of the course. Topics include intensive study of: cranial nerves; the motor system; gait and coordination; the sensory system; the neuro vascular system; and seizure disorder. The program is geared to the needs of critical care nurses, emergency room nurses, and nurses working in intensive care. When Northern Illinois Medical Center opens in June, there will be a special unit for patients recovering from neurological trauma. Neurosurgeon Rodrigo Merino-Roldan, MD, addresses a class of 21 nurses on staff at Northern Illinois Medical Center (McHenry Hospital), and Memorial Hospital for McHenry County, Wood stock, during a 14-part series he is teaching on the topic of neurological assessments. O'Hagan named to Nunda trustee vacancy The Nunda Township Board of Trustees, at the March 8 meeting, appointed John P. O'Hagan as trustee to fill the vacancy of William J. Dostal, who recently resigned. The trustees also found itself in the position of seeking another applicant for the board to fill the vacancy of Trustee Frank W. Stampler, who unexpectedly resigned at the same meeting. There is one year remaining in Stampler's four- year term as elections are slated for April 2, 1985.
