Lenten program Beginning with Ash Wednes day, -/ the people of St. John the Baptist Chruch walked into church to see a life-size crucifix draped in purple cloth during the time of the penitential season to remind the of the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. The Cross, a personal gift to Father Holdren who used it in Passion Plays given the past 12 years on Good Friday, was placed in the sanctuary of the church to remind parishioners of St. John the Baptist of how much Jesus Christ loved them. According to the Rev. John C. Holdren, "The Church gives us a special invitation for a special new beginning; in six weeks comes the annual reenactment of the mysteries by which we are redeemmed, our Lord's passion and death and resurrection. The Church invites us to prepare to be redeemed all over to renew the grace we first received in baptism. "Lent is a sign then for all to take new courage for the Church herself will show us again this year how to be true Christians. The word Lent itself is the old English word for spring. Spring housecleaning new spring clothes, the feeling of new life and hope." JkuWaSm HARDWARE STORES TRU-TEST We've got what it takes Iniiirvclusln AltCX FACTORY-TO-YOU SAVINGS! Almost 60 percent of it can be reclaimed for motor oil, 5 percent for it will be reclaimed as gasoline, and the balance will be used in the manufacture of asphalt. The McHenry County Defenders, in their recycling drives, will accept used oil and see that it is put back into our useable oil supply. They also take care, according to a Defender spokesman, to see that it is handled by an E.P.A. certified dealer, thus insuring that no contaminants are in troduced into the environment. Used motor oil is just one of the items you can bring to the Defenders recycling drive which will be held Saturday, March 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the parking lot of McHenry Com munity High School West Campus, 4724 West Crystal Lake Road. In addition, they will accept newspapers with no magazines or junk mail in cluded, brown paper bags and cardboard tied into manageable bundles, glass containers with all plastic and metal removed, "tin cans" which are clean and flattened,, and aluminum scrap of all kinds. This week, the Defenders are paying 35 cents a poud for crushed, 100 percent aluminum cans, 33 cents per pound for uncrushed cans, and a 1 cent a pound bonus for lots of more than 100 pounds. For additional information about recycling contact a Defender representative at 385- 8512.
